Update on Contact Talks Between New Jersey Devils & Starting Goalie
Rumour: We offer the latest on the negotiations between the Devils and goalie Jacob Markstrom. ESPN’s Kevin Weekes said that New Jersey offered a deal that saw a $5 million cap hit. However, Weekes didn’t say how long the term was or if Markstrom denied the offer.
Per sources, I’m told initial offer was in the $5M per year range from @NJDevils on a potential contract extension with Markstrom . #NJDevils #HockeyX pic.twitter.com/8d6ibgghGB

Analysis: The Devils are working with a veteran goaltending tandem of Jake Allen and Markstrom this season. This summer, Allen was signed to a five-year deal with an average cap hit of $1.8 million per season.
Markstrom is in the final season of his current contract, which sees him make $6 million per season. If Weekes’ report is correct, the $5 million would be less than what the Swedish goalie is currently getting.
New Jersey has already taken care of a massive piece of business by locking down defenceman Luke Hughes to a seven-year deal worth $9 million per season. Devils General Manager Tom Fitzgerald will now turn his attention to solidifying the crease for the near future.
Fitzgerald told the media that the team would love to keep Markstrom, who has been solid since coming over from the Calgary Flames. The New Jersey GM said that having a pair of veteran netminders gives the team a chance to win every night.
What It Means
The salary cap may be going, but the Devils are going to try to make sure they get good value for their money. New Jersey has already committed significant money to players like Luke and Jack Hughes, Timo Meier, and others. They also have to be ready to make sure they have enough to give Nico Hischier a well-deserved raise.
The league will be seeing sizeable leaps in the salary cap for the next few years. However, tying up massive amounts of money into the Devils’ goaltending could prevent them from being flexible down the way.
New Jersey also has a couple of young goaltending prospects in the pipeline. Mikhail Yegorov and Jakub Malek do show some promise, but both are very early in their respective careers. Yegorov will be in his second season at Boston University in the NCAA, while Malek will be with the Utica Comets of the AHL.
Markstrom could also be a target for other teams if he does hit the free agent market. He may be 35 years old, but he brings plenty of experience. However, Fitzgerald and the Devils likely want to get a deal done with Markstrom before free agency.
