Jeff Skinner Signs in San Jose

Skinner signs his new deal following a trip to the Stanley Cup Final. It was Skinner’s first trip to the Final in his career. Skinner spent the 2024-25 season with the Edmonton Oilers. In 72 games in the regular season, Skinner scored 16 goals. In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Skinner played in five games, scoring one goal. Moreover, it was his first ever time playing post-season hockey.

Skinner has scored 373 goals and recorded 699 assists in his career. In addition to winning the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie in 2011, Skinner has been named to the All-Star Game twice.

Skinner’s Role

Skinner signs his new deal looking to help the Sharks develop their young stars. Skinner is no longer the player who won the Calder Trophy in 2011, nor is he the player who scored 40 goals in the 2018-19 season. However, Skinner is someone who can score around 20 goals, which can be an asset for his new team.

Something that could help Skinner and the team from Silicon Valley is if Skinner can produce on the power play. Last year was the only the second time in Skinner’s career in which he did not record a power play goal. However, Skinner did play on the same team as Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, so the opportunities on the power play were limited.

Having experienced a run to the Stanley Cup Final, Skinner can use that experience to help the Sharks and their youth down the road. There is something to be said for experience. While Skinner and the Oilers fell short in the Final, the inexperience Skinner gained is valuable.

Milestone Watch

Skinner will enter the 2025-26 season looking for his 700th career point. Furthermore, Skinner is approaching 400 career goals. Skinner is 27 goals away from that mark. Should Skinner find his own self, he may achieve that this season.
