NHL Rumours: Vancouver Canucks Forward Seeks Raise

December 13, 2024 by Last Word On Hockey

NHL rumours

It’s time for another edition of NHL rumours. We’re in the middle of holiday season, but some players are hoping for a post-Christmas wish. We’ve seen some big deals signed for the 2025-26 season. However, there could be a number of big names heading to the open market. The likely rise in the salary cap is going to make for some rich contracts for key players. One of these players that could head to free agency plays for the Vancouver Canucks. This edition of NHL rumours focuses on a forward looking for a big contract.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

NHL Rumours

Vancouver Canucks Forward Looking for Massive Contract

Rumour: Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos reported that Canucks forward Brock Boeser is looking for an eight-year deal of $8 million for his next deal. Boeser becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Analysis: Boeser is looking for a raise from his current $6.65 million that he’s currently getting the Canucks to compete for a Stanley Cup and Boeser is expected to be part of the team’s core.

Vancouver has talented players like Elias Pettersson, Quinn Hughes and J.T. Miller and they’d like Boeser to be part of the vision. However, Boeser is seeking a payday because he’s played a hand in the team’s success.

Kypreos is quick to point out that the Tampa Bay Lightning‘s deal for Jake Guentzel over the summer has changed the market. Guentzel got himself a $9 million deal and Boeser is looking to cash in this summer.

The Cost of Doing Business

With the salary cap going up, players are going to seek an increase in salary. Boeser comes into the weekend with eight goals, 11 assists and 19 points this season. The former University of North Dakota product got his first 40-goal season last year and is trying get that contract.

Boeser signed a three-year bridge contract and he’s in the final season of that deal. Kypreos said that the Canucks are not yet prepared to pay him what his projected value is.

General manager Patrik Allvin probably doesn’t like the idea of losing a key player like Boeser for nothing. However, Allvin has been proactive about not letting things get to a certain point.

What It Means

Kypreos went onto add that the Canucks have been willing to make trades since Allvin took over. It seems unthinkable, but Boeser could be a trade candidate if a new deal doesn’t happen.

Letting a player walk away for nothing wouldn’t be ideal. Allvin might want to spin a bonafide scorer like Boeser into some assets.

Cnaucks President Jim Rutherford has been fairly clear about seeing if Boeser can repeat the magic from last season before committing to a big-time deal.

If things do go well for Boeser, it’s likely the franchise will reward him with a new deal. The Burnsville, Minn. native is eligible to sign a new deal at any time due to him being in the last year of his current contract.
