It’s time for another edition of NHL rumours. We’re in the middle of the long, hot summer. However, there’s plenty to discuss when it comes to rosters. Teams have already made a number moves, but general managers are still working on improvements. We could still some roster moves made during the summertime. Teams are going to still check in and do some things prior to the start of training camp.
One club that may be in the market for players is the Columbus Blue Jackets. This edition of NHL rumours deals with one position that the team is looking for cover at.

Columbus Blue Jackets Look Into Goaltending Market
Rumour: Aaron Portzline of The Athletic said that the Blue Jackets are looking into some cover for the goalie position. Columbus is trying to make sure it has backup in case of an injury.

Analysis: The Blue Jackets currently have Elvis Merzļikins and Jet Greaves as their current goaltenders. However, general manager Don Waddell talked to Portzline about the current situation. Waddell said that both current netminders are very important to the roster. However, they would like to have a decent number three that could play in the AHL.
Columbus would like to find a goalie that doesn’t require going through waivers. However, goalies like that are difficult to find. The Blue Jackets currently sit 13th on the waiver wire priority list and would have to put them back on waivers if they have to claim someone.
Training camp roster cuts could yield the Blue Jackets some cover in goal. However, they would have to wait for those cuts to happen before addressing the situation. Portzline mentions Matt Murray, Cal Petersen, Cayden Primeau and Ville Husso among possible names that could be on waivers in the fall.
What It Means
Waddell said that he is not opposed to carry three goalies. However, it’s not the most ideal situation for the team. They would like to be able to shuttle the third netminder between the AHL Cleveland Monsters and the parent club in Columbus. However, this may not happen due to having to put any claimed goalie through the waiver process.
Teams like the Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens have carried three goalies on the main roster in recent seasons. However, it was only a short-term fix and it didn’t last for an entire season. Merzļikins started for most of the season with Danil Tarasov seeing time in between the pipes as well. However, Greaves played a good chunk of the schedule as the Blue Jackets made a surprising Stanley Cup Playoff push.
Tarasov ended up signing with the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers in the off-season to be the backup to Sergei Bobrovsky. Greaves could play a larger role with the club, but Waddell would be smart in having a third goalie in the fold. The Blue Jackets want to prove that last season wasn’t a fluke, but need to address this position.
