2024-25 Season Series: Split between the two sides 2-2

This matchup on NHL predictions features two Metropolitan Division rivals who are in similar positions in the standings, squaring off. The Islanders, who are on fire as of late, are fifth in the Metropolitan Division. Their record stands at 4-3 through seven games. The Flyers sit seventh in the division with a record of 3-3-1 through seven games. They are separated in the standings by just a point. That makes the two points in this game all that more important, even in the early going of the season. This will be the first of four matchups between these two teams. This first one takes place at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Islanders Story

The Islanders come into this game as one of the hottest teams in the league. They are winners of their last four games in a row. A big reason for the winning has been the offence showing out in the last few games. They have scored more than four goals in all four of the games on this win streak. All the scoring has bumped them up to fourth in the league in goals for at 3.86 a game. Led by Bo Horvat and his four-game, seven-point streak. He leads the team with nine points in seven games. Mathew Barzal has a four-game, six-point streak going. Captain Anders Lee has seven points in his last three games. Even Emil Heineman, who was acquired for Noah Dobson, has a career-long five-game point streak. We could go on about all the point production they are getting. Their offensive attack has been dynamic and balanced, not just relying on one player and line to contribute.

Defensively, however, things could be better. They rank towards the bottom of the league in goals against per game, with 3.43, which is 23rd. The team has allowed a lot of shots and grade a chances at that. First in the league is high-danger shots allowed at 27. Help won’t be on the way either, as Alexander Romanov was just put on IR. Veteran Adam Boqvist has been filling in for him. However, today it will be Marshall Warren making his NHL debut. In the net will be Ilya Sorokin, after three straight losses to start his season, he has won back-to-back starts. His record is 2-3 with an .873 save percentage and a high 3.90 goals-against average.

The Flyers Story

The Flyers come into this game after a loss in their last game. That ended what was a two-game winning streak for them. As a team, goals have not been coming at a premium for them so far. They rank 24th in goals for with 2.71 per game. They have scored two goals or less in three of their last four games. Led by Sean Couturier and his eight points in seven games. He has a two-game point streak heading into this game. Owen Tippett has goals in three of the last four games. Tyson Foerster has goals in back-to-back games as well. These three are the dangerous goal scorer for Philly to be on the lookout for.

Philly is a better defensive team than they are offensively. In this department they are a top-10 team, only allowing 2.57 goals-per-game. They have only allowed 14 high-danger shots, that also ranks in the top-10 of the league. The Flyers have a great penalty kill too, this unit also ranks in the top-10 at 86.2%. Solid goaltending play will help these numbers greatly. They have that in starter Dan Vladar, backup Samuel Ersson has been the opposite however. Ersson is 0-1-1 with a .849 save percentage and 3.88 goals against. Vladar is 3-2 with a strong .932 save percentage and 1.81 goals-against average. No goalie has been announced yet but with the form Vladar is in, we figure it will be him.

Prediction

On paper this is a pretty evenly matched game. Islanders offensively have the advantage, the Flyers have it defensively. Despite the stats being off the goalies are evenly matched. Philly does have home ice advantage and that could be a deciding factor. However, we don’t think it will decide this game. The Islanders offence has been hot and scoring at will. We feel like they will be the deciding factor here. They have the talent to generate the more chances and just outscore the Flyers. New York should improve to a five game winning streak when it is all said and done.

Prediction: Islanders win 4-2

Prop Bets

Popular sports books have the Islanders as underdogs on the road in Philly. We like their chances in this game and at +105 on the money line, that is good value. For this game, the over/under is set at 5.5. Given the Islanders offensive surge and sometimes leaky defensive style, we like the over at -142.

As far as any-time goal scorers, for the Islanders we like Bo Horvat. He has been on a tear, leading the team in goals so far and after his three game goal streak ended, he will be looking to start a new one. His odds are at +190. For the Flyers Owen Tippett at +210. He has five goals already this season which leads his team.
