Djurgardens IF has long been one of the top places for young Swedish prospects and this year is no different. Centre Anton Frondell has helped the team into the playoff final as they look to move back to the SHL after spending a few seasons in the Allsvenskan.  Despite playing in Sweden’s number two men’s league, the prospect pipeline marches on as teammate Victor Eklund is also a top draft prospect.

Frondell scored 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points in 29 games in the men’s league this year. His point total was the most by any under-18 player in the Allsvenskan this year. He has also added three goals and an assist for four points in 11 qualification playoff games. Frondell is expected to be part of Sweden’s team for the IIHF Under-18 World Championships.  In December he helped Sweden to a silver medal at the World Junior A Championships.

Skating

Frondell is a good skater but there is definitely room for improvement here. He can continue to work on his explosiveness and acceleration.  It is decent enough and won’t hold him back in the NHL, but it is also not at an area where he will separate himself from the pack. His top end speed is also good but not great. The best part of his skating is his edgework and agility. Frondell’s quick cuts as well as his lateral movement helps him to get away from opposing defenders both with and without the puck. As he grows into his frame and adds muscle he should develop a stronger stride and better balance. This will help him to fight through checks as well as win battles on the boards.

Offensive Game

Frondell is an excellent playmaker. He has the vision and passing skills to find open teammates and get them the puck in good scoring areas. Frondell has excellent stickhandling skills. He can control the puck, speeding up the play or slowing it down. His ability to control the puck down low allows his teammates to get open, and when they do, he can hit them with a tape-to-tape pass. He reads the play exceptionally well. Frondell seems to know where everyone is on the ice at all times as well as when they will get open. It is this anticipation and hockey sense that makes him a top prospect.

Frondell can also score goals. He has a very quick and deceptive release on both his wrist shot and snap shot. This can fool goalies. His shot is powerful and accurate as well. Frondell has a knack for finding open space without the puck, getting himself open for a pass for a teammate. He moves the puck well with give and go style plays with teammates. Frondell is willing to battle on the boards and go to the tough areas of the ice. However, playing in a men’s league, he can be overpowered by older and stronger opponents. This is an area of his game that should improve as he adds muscle to his frame.

Defensive Game

Frondell uses his high end hockey sense and anticipation in both ends of the ice. He supports the defense down low and plays strong positional hockey. Against the rush, he provides effective back pressure and reads the play well. Frondell has a quick stick and is able to create turnovers and turn the puck up the ice quickly. His quick stick also cuts off passing lanes and creates turnovers. He is good in the faceoff circle for his age, and this should only improve as he gets stronger on the puck. Frondell has been an effective penalty killer when playing against his age group, but has not been asked to do a lot of this in the Allsvenskan. However, this is something that should continue to develop as he gets stronger and more experienced.

Projection and Comparison

Anton Frondell has the skill and ability to be a number one centre in the NHL. He will need to work on his skating and get stronger but he has the physical and mental tools to succeed. He will likely spend another year in Sweden before coming over to the NHL. The lighter European schedule should give him the time to add the needed upper and lower body strength. That said, he is succeeding in a men’s league despite this right now. Frondell’s game is reminiscent of Nick Suzuki. However this is a stylistic comparison only right now and not one based on his skill and ability. If he reaches his potential, he will be a big minute player capable of helping his team on the power play and penalty kill.  Frondell has the potential to help his team in all situations.
