The New Jersey Devils have re-signed former Stanley Cup Champion goaltender to their team. The Devils have signed Jake Allen to a five-year contract.

Allen’s new contract is worth $1.8 million per season. The 34-year-old is entering his 13th NHL season and is sticking around with his third team. Allen started his career with the St. Louis Blues, where he spent seven seasons and won the Stanley Cup as the team’s backup goaltender in 2019. After the 2019-20 season, the Blues traded Allen to the Montreal Canadiens, where he backed up Carey Price and was part of the Habs team that reached the 2021 Stanley Cup Final. After four years with the Habs, Allen was dealt to the New Jersey Devils, where he spent the last two seasons.
Allen Has Split Time as a Starter and as a Backup
Allen’s career started with promise. He was billed as the future of the Blues. Allen showed signs of how good he could be, including a strong performance in the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs. However, struggles arose. Combined with the play of Jordan Binnington, Allen lost his starting job.
With the Habs, Allen spent some time as a starter as a result of injuries to Price. With the Devils, Allen served as the backup to Jacob Markstrom. As a Devil, Allen made unique history in October of this past season. With a shutout of the Utah Hockey Club, Allen became the first goalie to earn a win against 33 NHL franchises.
Role with New Team
Allen will continue to serve as a backup to Jacob Markstrom. However, this can always change due to injury or ineffectiveness. Allen’s experience as a starter could come in handy. The long-term deal gives Allen some security, and he can now truly settle into what became his new home during the 2023-24 season.
