Each day, our writers here at Last Word on Hockey look at the games and give in-depth analysis. Our team breaks down the key matchups, storylines, and stats, then makes predictions based on how they might play out. The Canucks’ Story
Vancouver failed to qualify for the playoffs in 2024-25 after slipping out of a playoff spot in March and never gaining back ground. They’ve started their season 1-1, with some flaws being exposed on their defensive side in their 3-1 loss on Saturday. Still, they have entered the season with a lot of optimism. Quinn Hughes remains a key player on the team, and is looking to record his first goal of the season on Monday. Their top-six has good talent on paper and a good mixture of veterans such as Elias Peterson gives them a steady core.
Five-on-five structure and strong goaltending will mainly determine if the Canucks can keep up with a competitive Blues team trying to press their foot on the gas. Expect Vancouver to try and control the pace on their home ice and force the Blues to earn chances through cycles with high pressure.
The Blues’ Story
St. Louis got back on their feet Saturday after dropping their home opener 5-0 to the Minnesota Wild. Goals by Jake Neighbors and Pius Suter in the third period propelled the Blues to a 4-2 win to secure their first one of the season. Joel Hofer pulled off some marvelous saves against Calgary on Saturday, and was one of the main reasons the blues skated off with a win. They will enter Vancouver with the same 1-1 record as their opponent.
Staying out of the penalty box will be a must for the Blues for this game. They were called for six minor penalties on Saturday, which led to a lot of defensive control rather than offensive opportunities. Playing a clean game and minimizing mental errors will be their key to leaving Vancouver with a win.
Jordan Binnington will likely make the start in Mondays game. However, after Joel Hofers performance last game, don’t be too surprised if head coach Jim Montgomery gives him the start instead.
Prediction: Canucks vs Blues
Both teams enter this game 1-1, and the game will likely be a close chess match. Special teams could swing the game if one team continuously returns to the penalty box, as both teams have power-play weapons.
St. Louis’ momentum from Saturdays’ win along with their balanced depth could give them the edge, but Vancouver’s home ice and hungry roster makes this one a coin flip.
Blues win, 3-2 in overtime.
Prop Bets of the Night
We close out our predictions with some prop bets of the night. Most sport books have the over/under for this game at 5.5, and we think this one could be one that stays under.
For individual props, we’re going with Robert Thomas to record at least one point for St. Louis. For Vancouver, Quinn Hughes to record at least one point.
