Could Nikolaj Ehlers be a good fit for the Devils? “Ehlers wouldn’t need to be the answer in New Jersey — the Devils already have Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt and Nico Hischier up front, with Dawson Mercer and Ehlers’ former junior teammate Timo Meier playing important roles. Still, New Jersey has room for one more game-breaker in its top six and lamented its lack of offense during the playoffs. Ehlers is dangerous in transition, creative on the power play and an underrated puck retrieval weapon to help extend offensive zone shifts.” [The Athletic ($)]
“New Jersey is in desperate need of some center depth, and (William) Karlsson has been an excellent two-way center for the better part of a decade now. If the Vegas Golden Knights are serious about moving him as a cap dump, the Devils need to be all over it. It certainly doesn’t hurt that he’s played wing before, either, even if he is a tried-and-true center in the NHL.” [Devils’ Advocates]
“Jake Allen is the best goaltender slated to hit the open market in three weeks. It’s not even close. Allen will be in high demand and have the ability to choose from a bevy of teams based on whichever factors he deems most important, be it comfort, money, caliber of team, or climate. Let’s take a look at four potential landing spots that stand out from the rest.” [Infernal Access ($)]
“How can the Devils become contenders in a Metropolitan Division that looks less competitive than it once did? External additions will help, but they also need some things to go right internally.” [Devils on the Rush]
On Josh Filmon’s first pro season in the ECHL: “For his first pro season, I thought it went well. He came in, and it is tough to adjust to the pro level, especially when you are still eligible to play juniors, as Josh was last year. He came in, and you could see the vision, his shot, and just the way he carries himself day-to-day, that he is going to be a great pro.” [The Hockey News]
