July 15, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

The nearly two-decade long rebuild is continuing for the Buffalo Sabres. News emerged that the Sabres have re-signed Bowen Byram, despite all the trade rumours, and his pending arbitration hearing. The defenceman has been signed to a two-year deal worth $12.5 million or $6.25 million AAV.  Byram will be an unrestricted free agent when the deal expires. This is another move as the Sabres continue to try to get some sort of forward momentum.

Buffalo Sabres Re-Sign Bowen Byram

Byram has played for the Colorado Avalanche and the Sabres over his five-year NHL career. The 23-year-old has seven goals and 31 assists for 38 points in 82 games this season. He has a Corsi for of 48.1 and a relative Corsi 0f -2.6.

The Cranbrook, British Columbia native had 33 goals and 77 assists for 110 points in 246 career games. Colorado originally drafted him in the first round, fourth overall of the 2019 NHL Draft. Byram had a standout career at the major junior level with the Vancouver Giants and earned a number of honours in the league.

He has also represented his native Canada at the international level. Byram won a gold and a silver with the Canadian squads at the 2020 and 2021 IIHF World Junior Championships, respectively. He also on the fourth-place squad at the 2024 IIHF World Championships.

What It Means

It’s another move made by Sabres General Manager Kevyn Adams tries to rebuild the Sabres. Byram came over in the 2024 trade deadline from Colorado as part of the Casey Mittelstadt trade. However, Byram is on the move again.

Buffalo has been stuck in the mud for a number of years. Some thought Byram would be part of the long-term solution, and he has the opportunity to do so now..

Bryam is still a young player trying to find his game. He still has plenty of upside and can be a solid middle or top-pair blueliner. The youngster can really help out on both ends of the ice if he can find the next level.
