In this week’s burning questions column, TOJ Live Co-Host Stephen Zantz will be addressing the burning questions surrounding the team heading into Jaguars week. The Jets fell to the Buccaneers 27-24 which has them at 4-12 on the season.
Did the Jets find a starting RG for 2022? Jet fans had enough of Greg Van Roten before we even made it through September. There were countless clips of him getting absolutely destroyed in pass blocking situations. No disrespect to GVR but he simply isn’t a starter in the NFL. Joe Douglas made an in-season attempt to find another option by trading Daniel Brown to Kansas City for Laurent Duvernay-Tardif who hadn’t been playing at all this season after opting out of 2020. I must say this was a homerun move as LDT has brought much more stability to the interior which allowed Connor McGovern to play much better than we saw in 2020 and for the early part of this season. LDT will be 31 next season but that doesn’t mean the Jets should not retain him for 2022. The run game has been much stronger since he was inserted into the lineup. My two cents would be to resign LDT to either a 1 or 2 year deal and sign a veteran or draft an IOL on day 2 or 3.
Why did SNY feel the need to attack Zach Wilson’s character? I would like to point out from the start that I like Leger, Bart, and Willie. They all were good Jets and seem like good guys. I don’t understand why they felt the need to attack Zach’s character for what happened on that 4th and 2 play which lost the Jets the game. Zach made a mistake and the staff stated it was a communication issue. Whether they are lying or not, Zach is allowed to make mistakes because 1. he is human and 2. he is a rookie so this is to be expected. Does anyone else remember Trevor Lawrence inexplicably spiking the ball last week which cost the Jags? I do not buy that Zach was trying to get all the glory but making the 1st down run happen with his feet. He’s trying to win the game and doesn’t care how it happens. Willie Colon decided to discuss this on Carton and Roberts (clip below) on Monday and claimed to have info from inside the building but wouldn’t further elaborate on it. That is complete bullshit (excuse my french Joe C). All indications are Zach has zero character issues and handles himself like a pro in Florham Park. Let’s find something better to talk about going forward.

Which veteran safeties should the Jets target in free agency? I really would prefer the Jets do not spend a top 10 pick on Kyle Hamilton in April. There is a strong safety market in this free agent class and I would love to see the Jets find two new starters to help a decimated unit from this season. My personal favorite option would be to poach Jessie Bates III away from the Bengals. He is young and is on the cusp of entering his prime. The Bengals have been known to be a frugal organization so there’s a big chance he hits FA but they can also tag him. The other option I’d be intrigued by is Marcus Williams from the Saints. He is also a young player who has been part of one the best defenses in 2021. The Saints are in cap hell so there is a very real chance they let him walk in March. Some other options that the Jets should consider include Tyrann Mathieu (probably resigns with KC), Terrell Edmunds, & Jaquiski Tartt (played under Saleh for 3 years).
