Rumors have been swirling in recent weeks about the future of New York Jets duo Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall. The latter released a post on social media saying, “They want me to lay down but I got sum to stand for…,” and ended the post with the hashtag ‘Free20’. Hall has since denied the message was a signal he wanted out of the Jets but would it be in the interest of the team to trade both Hall and Wilson and start a rebuild?
Reasons for a Rebuild
The first issue to address when discussing the potential trade of Wilson and Hall is why do it? Why do the Jets need a rebuild starting now? It simply comes down to results and following the 13-6 loss to Carolina Panthers on the 19th of October, it left the Jets with 7 straight defeats this season. The Jets are rooted to the bottom of the AFC and are the only team in the NFL without a win this season.
It’s going to take a monumental effort for the Jets to claim a wild card place. It would be a wonderful achievement, and the odds are against them. However, the interest in their situation is so significant that many looking to start betting on the NFL utilize options like the bet365 refer a friend bonus.
There is no doubt the Jets need something to change but is trading Wilson the best option right now? If anything, it should be Wilson forcing himself out rather than the Jets looking to offload the wide receiver. If Wilson was operating in a strong team with, at worst, a league average quarterback, his stats would be significantly better.
Wilson recently signed a four-year, $130 million contract extension but a clear breakdown between the wide receiver and the team could lead to an exit. Wilson has publicly aired his displeasure at head coach Aaron Glenn on the field this season and it could be to the benefit of all parties that Wilson moves on.
Breece Hall
Hall has entered the final year of his rookie contract and with the Jets having such a poor record this season, teams will be interested in obtaining his services. Hall has been the subject of trade rumours for much of the season, and they have intensified in recent weeks. One issue that could prevent a trade for Hall is the injury to Braelon Allen. Should the Jets trade Hall, they could be leaving themselves light in that position.
For the Jets to consider letting Hall go, it must be a trade that brings in a starting wide receiver. Should the Jets allow Hall to leave with no starting replacement it will send a signal to the rest of the team that they have given up on the season. However, if the Jets do nothing now, there is a chance Hall will leave as a free agent in the offseason.
Given the position of the Jets in the AFC, starting a rebuild now seems like a good idea. That could mean losing some players, such as Hall, without adding a suitable replacement which gives off the impression of conceding the season is over. That approach will not please the fans. So, while trading Wilson and Hall may seem like a good place to start a rebuild, it is unlikely both players will leave.
