Rising Stars: young players who could shape the future of the Jets

January 23, 2025 by The Gang Green

The New York Jets have had a rather terrible season in 2024-2025. With just five victories and twelve losses, they’ve shown glimpses of brilliance alongside areas needing improvement. Fans are eager to see the team become a more consistent contender as they navigate through the challenges of a competitive league.

One thing remains clear—there’s always room for growth, especially with the addition of young talent. The Jets have invested in promising players who could significantly affect the team’s future. These fresh faces bring not just energy and skill, but also a palpable sense of hope, the potential to help the Jets rise to new heights in the seasons ahead.

Olu Fashanu – Offensive Tackle

The Jets made a strategic move by selecting Olu Fashanu in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Coming out of Penn State with a reputation as one of the top offensive linemen in college football, he has exceeded expectations. His strength, agility, and ability to read defensive setups make him a cornerstone for the Jets’ offensive line.

Fashanu immediately affected pass protection and run blocking. The offensive line, which struggled in prior seasons, now has more consistency, allowing the quarterback more time to make plays.

Analysts have pointed out that his presence stabilizes the offense and could influence odds by FanDuel, particularly when the Jets face stronger defensive teams. With his work ethic and leadership potential, Fashanu looks set to anchor the line for years.

Malachi Corley – Wide Receiver

Malachi Corley has brought fresh energy to the Jets’ receiving corps since being drafted in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. At Western Kentucky, Corley showed explosive playmaking and generated yards after the catch. Those skills should have made him a reliable target in the Jets’ offense, especially in short and intermediate routes.

Corley, however, failed to make an impact. He played in only nine regular season games, catching just three passes for a total of 16 yards. Corley’s versatility should have allowed the team to use him in different formations, keeping defenses guessing, but he just wasn’t ready. Hopefully, he will have an expanded role in the offense next year, as he will gain experience and manage to develop chemistry with whoever the next Jets starting quarterback is going to be.

Braelon Allen – Running Back

Braelon Allen joined the Jets as a 4th round draft pick in 2024, but his impact has far exceeded expectations. Allen was a standout at Wisconsin and built a reputation as a power back who thrived in physical matchups. His ability to push through defenders and gain tough yards has given the Jets an edge in critical situations.

Allen has become a key piece of the team’s running back rotation. His contributions have added depth to the offense, particularly in short-yardage scenarios where his strength shines. Besides his running skills, Allen has an impressive pass-catching ability, allowing him to stay on the field for more snaps. This well-rounded skill set makes him a valuable contributor as the Jets aim to develop a more balanced offense.

Jordan Travis – Quarterback

Selected in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Jordan Travis brings dual-threat capabilities to the Jets’ quarterback room. During his tenure at Florida State, Travis showcased impressive mobility and playmaking skills, making him a dynamic addition to the offense.

Unfortunately, due to a fractured and dislocated ankle, Travis didn’t play any snaps in preseason or regular season. His chance will definitely come next season. While currently positioned as a backup, his unique skill set offers the coaching staff flexibility in designing offensive schemes. Travis could become a valuable asset as he develops, especially in situations that leverage his athleticism.

Isaiah Davis – Running Back

Isaiah Davis is another running back selected by the Jets in the 2024 NFL Draft. He was a rather unexpected pick, considering how loaded the Gang Green’s backfield already was at that time. Despite sharing playing time with fellow running backs, Breece Hall and Braelon Allen, Davis played in all 17 games. He ran the ball 30 times for 174 yards (5.8 yards per carry) and scored one rushing touchdown. The Jets also utilized him as a receiver and a kickoff returner. Davis averaged 25.8 yards per return and also caught 9 passes for 75 yards, 1 TD.

It remains to be seen what the new Jets coaching staff is going to do with the running game. Davis’ role, however, can only expand due to his versatility.

Conclusion

The Jets are entering a critical phase in their journey, and these young players symbolize hope for a brighter future. Each brings unique skills and potential that could address the team’s weaknesses and bolster its strengths. While challenges remain, the infusion of fresh talent has already sparked optimism among fans and analysts alike.

Focusing on their development and maximizing their contributions will be key to the Jets’ long-term success. These rising stars offer immediate improvements and represent the foundation of what could become a dominant team in the NFL. With the proper guidance and opportunities, they can shape the Jets into a force to be reckoned with for years, and we, as fans, are invested in their journey.
