I have to do at least one for the season, right? Here is my one and only New York Jets seven round mock draft…brought to you by TapRm (promo code “Jets50” for $50 off your next order!)
1st Round (4th Overall) – Kayvon Thibodeaux, Edge Rusher, Oregon
Joe Douglas has not shied away from “high ceiling but potentially low floor” swings with his first overall picks in the first two drafts he ran (Mekhi Becton and Zach Wilson). The trend does not change, as he takes a player that many thought was the best in this class only a few months ago and fills a massive need for the Jets defense.
1st Round (10th Overall) – Drake London, Wide Receiver, USC
An ideal physical running mate for Elijah Moore who will win on the contested catches that Wilson regularly throws up when he breaks the pocket and is better after the catch than he is getting credit for. Jameson Williams is also a very real possibility here.
2nd Round (35th Overall) – Lewis Cine, Safety, Georgia
Cine is capable of being a plug and play starter alongside Jordan Whitehead (or to gradually get there by mid season behind Lamarcus Joyner) and will add some needed range and aggressiveness to the Jets backend.
2nd Round (38th Overall) – Chad Muma, Linebacker, Wyoming
An underrated need for the Jets is filled by Muma, who the Jets got exposure to at the Senior Bowl. The run defense will improve with more sure tackling at the second level and Muma can absolutely provide that. Robert Saleh should be pleased as the Jets go defense with 3 of their first 4 picks.
3rd Round (69th Overall) – Tyler Smith, Tackle, Tulsa
He may not last this long but an ideal developmental tackle, who should be primed to start for 2023 if/when George Fant leaves in free agency or if Mekhi Becton does not work out.
4th Round (111th Overall) – Tyler Allgeier, Running Back, BYU
The Jets go back to the running back well in the 4th round to find their complement for Michael Carter as they work to build depth on their offense in the middle rounds.
4th Round (117th Overall) – John Ridgeway, Defensive Tackle, Arkansas
The Jets add another developmental defensive tackle to go with Jonathan Marshall and help fill some of the void left by Foley Fatukasi. Many fans seem to want a defensive tackle higher than this but I disagree unless someone truly surprising is there at #38.
5th Round (146th Overall) – Romeo Doubs, Wide Receiver, Nevada
Another wide receiver swing, Doubs is an intriguing late round dart throw who will add some juice behind the Jets 11 personnel of Moore, London and Corey Davis.
5th Round (163rd Overall) – Cade Otton, Tight End, Washington
The Jets will play plenty of 12 personnel this year so depth behind CJ Uzomah and Tyler Conklin is important. Otton can potentially be what they hoped Trevon Wesco would be last season.
