The NFL preseason is underway as teams report for training camp. In New Jersey, the New York Jets are hoping for fewer headlines off the field in Aaron Glenn’s first season as head coach. Unfortunately, an injury sustained by their starting quarterback, Justin Fields, could complicate matters. It was reported today that the quarterback was seen being carted off the field after suffering a lower leg injury. Understandably, teammates and fans were all worried about the worst-case scenario. However, the initial diagnosis is far more favorable than some anticipated. With luck, Fields should hopefully avoid missing any games in the regular season.
Justin Fields Update: Will Jets QB Miss Games After His Injury?
Back in March, the Jets decided to move on from quarterback Aaron Rodgers as they remade their offense. Following the hiring of Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, the team sought to become younger and more athletic at the position. Primarily, they hope that a more mobile quarterback will help add to the efficiency of the run game. As a result, the team opted to sign 2021 first-round pick Justin Fields to a two-year contract. New York hopes their Ohio State connection between Fields and star wide receiver Garrett Wilson can help keep the passing game afloat this season.

Fields joins the Jets after the team passed on him in the NFL Draft to select current Miami Dolphins backup quarterback Zach Wilson with the number two pick. Afterwards, Fields was drafted 11th overall by the Chicago Bears. Despite a combined record of 10-28 and inconsistency from the pocket, Fields utilized his time in Chicago to show flashes of his potential. During his time, Fields managed to elevate his completion percentage as a starter continuously.
Through the last three seasons, Fields has completed over 60% of his passes. However, the Chicago Bears traded Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers after drafting Caleb Williams to replace him. During his limited time in Pittsburgh, Fields continued to flash great potential. Through his six starts, the Steelers finished 4-2 when he started, while completing over 65% of his passes for the first time in his career and ten total touchdowns to only one interception. However, the Steelers opted to replace Fields with Russell Wilson, who managed to lead the Steelers to a playoff appearance.
Why Justin Fields was Carted off the Practice Field?
On Thursday, July 24th, Jets quarterback Justin Fields was limping on the field. The pain from the play forced the Jets quarterback to be carted off the practice field. Initially, fans and media feared the worst for Justin Fields injury. Many had flashbacks of Aaron Rodgers torn Achilles suffered in week 1 of the 2024 season. However, initial diagnosis seems to show the injury isn’t as significant as Rodgers.
Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Justin Fields latest injury has been diagnosed as a dislocated toe. The cause of the injury stemmed from a teammate unintentionally stepping on his foot during practice. Fortunately, the big toe appears to be okay, and no fractures have been diagnosed initially. This is a very significant update. If he sustained a broken toe, the injury would have guaranteed Fields missed week one vs. Pittsburgh in early September.

Will Justin Fields Injury Force Him to Miss Week One?
As we wait for further testing, the news of no toe fracture is very optimistic for New York. While they wish he were healthy, a dislocated toe will likely prevent Justin Fields any regular-season snaps. However, an injury like this would be wise for Aaron Glenn to be patient and let Fields heal. If Fields doesn’t play in the preseason due to the injury, expect more snaps for backup Tyrod Taylor.
The 15-year veteran remained in New York after backing up Aaron Rodgers last year. Taylor’s ample experience makes him more than capable of stepping in as a starter if Fields ever misses time. Additionally, the available snaps will also help settle the team’s third-string quarterback job. Any snaps for Fields can be split between veteran Adrian Martinez and UDFA Brady Cook. Martinez is in his second season with the team after a strong 2024 season in the UFL led to his signing. Brady Cook was a three-year starter at Missouri and 2025 first-round pick Armand Membou‘s starting quarterback in college.
