Justin Fields Could be Done in New York After Owner’s Quotes

October 22, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

This week is an important one on the NFL league calendar, as the fall league meetings are taking place. This is a conference among the owners and league personnel that often serves as a platform for team owners to speak to the media. The owner of the New York Jets, Woody Johnson, answered questions about the team. He did not hold back regarding the performance of the team. More specifically, the quarterbacks.

The Justin Fields Era Might Already Be Over

Woody Johnson does not seem fond of Justin Fields’ play over the last month. One of his quotes reads, “It’s hard when you have a quarterback with the rating that we’ve got”. This is not a hard quote to dissect at all. He knows Justin Fields has played poorly. He even went on to say, “If we can just complete a pass, it would look good,” hinting at Fields’ performances over the last two weeks. It feels like a full-on public humiliation ritual for the Jets’ Week 1 starter. The worst part about it is that Johnson is one hundred percent correct. Justin Fields is playing like one of the worst quarterbacks in football this season. Almost all of his passing volume has come in the fourth quarter of blowout losses. In the one and a half games he’s played over the last two weeks, he’s had 15 completions for 91 yards.

Aaron Glenn says Fields had only one bad game.

Here are Fields’ net passing yards before the 4th quarter by game this season:

PIT: 173
BUF: 17
MIA: 91
DAL: 97
DEN: 7

So much for accountability and setting a winning standard.

What Happens to Fields?

Justin Fields’ chances of starting another game for the New York Jets dwindle every week. He signed a two-year, $40 million contract with the Jets during this past offseason. Therefore, he is rather difficult to trade. However, if the plan is for Fields not to be the weekly starter, having that amount of money invested in him is disadvantageous for the Jets. The best course of action will probably be to release him after this season. The Jets will have to take on dead cap either way, but it’s better than leaving him on the roster. It’s a shame considering the hype that signing him created around the Jets. Reuniting him with his former Ohio State teammate Garrett Wilson was something the team, the fans, and even some analysts were excited about. Unfortunately, it seems it has all been for naught.

Jets QB News for Week 8

As for the starter in Week 8, it is unknown as of right now. Aaron Glenn has yet to reveal a starter, despite knowing who it is. The reason he hasn’t is to not give the Bengals a competitive advantage.

At this point in the season, with the Jets being 0-7, it should be assumed that every option is on the table. The Jets have three quarterbacks available to them: Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor, and Brady Cook. As has been discussed, Justin Fields is not playing well. This would lead many to assume that it would be Tyrod Taylor going against the Bengals. However, he has popped up on the injury report with a knee injury that has left him “day-to-day” per Adam Schefter. Brady Cook, a UDFA from Missouri, should not be ruled out at this point, but he has never seen regular-season NFL action. If I had to guess, Taylor ends up getting the start this week, recovering from whatever knee injury he popped up with.

Whatever the plan is this week, it needs to be a good one to contend with the Cincinnati Bengals.
