The New York Jets have officially parted ways with veteran kicker Greg Zuerlein, waiving the 13-year pro after three seasons with the team.
Greg Zuerlein
Zuerlein, known for his powerful leg and clutch ability, joined the Jets in 2022 and brought much-needed consistency to the position. He made 84 of 96 field goal attempts during his time in New York (87.5%), including a 60-yard bomb in 2022 that tied a franchise record. His 2023 campaign was especially solid, converting 35 of 38 field goals. However, after a slight decline in 2024 and a new regime in charge, the Jets are turning the page.
Now, a new competition begins in Florham Park, and two young kickers will get the first crack at the job.
Caden Davis
Davis signed with the Jets in May as an undrafted rookie out of Ole Miss. He quickly turned heads in college with a booming leg, converting multiple kicks from 50+ yards and earning second-team All-SEC honors in 2023. Davis was also named a Lou Groza Award semifinalist, recognition reserved for the top kickers in college football.
His leg strength is undeniable; he was known for sending kickoffs out of the end zone with ease, but consistency on field goals will be the key if he hopes to stick in the NFL. Davis has the upside to develop into a long-term solution if he proves himself this summer.
Anders Carlson
Carlson returns to the Jets after finishing the 2024 season on their active roster. The 6’5”, 220-pound Auburn product appeared in five games and was steady, hitting 8 of 10 field goals and all of his extra points. Originally a 2023 draft pick by the Packers, Carlson has bounced around but impressed the Jets enough to earn a reserve/futures deal in January.
He brings NFL experience and a calm demeanor to the competition. Carlson also has the benefit of having kicked in cold weather, something that can’t be overlooked in the AFC East.
More Competition Ahead?
While Davis and Carlson are the front-runners today, don’t rule out the Jets bringing in another kicker before training camp. Special teams coordinator Brant Boyer values competition, and this staff will be looking for the most reliable option heading into a pivotal 2025 season.
