Mekhi Becton still has a few pounds to go, but the Jets rookie is nearing his target weight.
The 11th overall pick said Thursday that he wants to play at 365 pounds. With Week 1 around the corner, he said he’s in the “high 360s” right now. Becton’s listed weight on the Jets’ website is 363 pounds, but he checked into camp at 370.
“Is 370 too high? Yeah. Is there a magic number? We’re working on that,” Jets offensive line coach Frank Pollack said a few weeks back. “He’s a young guy. He’s probably going to mature over time.”
Standing at 6-foot-7, the Jets drafted a mountain of a man in April. There was some concern over Becton’s weight during his time at Louisville — he got up to 389 pounds at one point — but the subject has hardly been an issue since joining the Jets. Rather, he and the team are simply trying to find the best number to maximize his athleticism, which is already rather good for a player of his stature.
Jets coaches and players have done nothing but gush over Becton’s first NFL training camp, so his weight is just a matter of fine-tuning.
