Jets owner Woody Johnson is officially in a class of his own, but not in the way he’d like to be. In the NFLPA’s annual player survey, Johnson was 1 of 32; the only owner to earn an “F” from his players for his contribution to team culture.
A myriad of factors likely played a role in this level of discontent, but topping the list, one would imagine, was the firing of head coach Robert Saleh following the team’s 2-3 start. Like him or not, Saleh was loved by his players and were clearly unhappy with the decision. Cornerback Sauce Gardner went so far as to say he was still playing “for Saleh” following his ouster.
Another cause was likely seeing Johnson’s son, Brick, steal the floor in a post-game locker room where the team was celebrating Jeff Ulbrich’s first win as a head coach. According to Andy Nesbitt of Sports Illustrated, the teenager’s decision to jump the line to award a game ball to Garrett Wilson for an incredible touchdown catch “took the air out of the room“.
Woody Johnson wasn’t alone in picking up poor grades from the players though. No aspect of the survey received an “A” and there were plenty of areas that came in at a “C” or worse. Those categories included treatment of families, food/dining, locker room, training room and training staff.
The top grade went to the team’s dietician who earned a B+.
But as the saying goes in pro sports, “winning fixes everyting” and that’s exactly what Johnson hopes the additions of head coach Aaron Glenn and GM Darren Mougey will help end the team’s fourteen year playoff drought.
