Media were on hand for the Jets’ OTA practice today. Here’s what went down according to those on hand:
- Tanner Engstrand and Steve Wilks spoke to the media before practice and Justin Fields talked to them afterwards. Perhaps the most interesting quote came from Steve Wilks who said he has found Will McDonald to be “more physical and stronger than what I anticipated and saw from afar”;
- Among the players not at practice were Quinnen Williams and Micheal Clemons;
- Malachi Corley and (obviously) Jermaine Johnson were rehabbing injuries;
- The Jets were sloppy on offense early with a few botched exchanges and dropped passes;
- Fields had a couple of quarterback keepers for good yardage on the first series in team (7-v-7) drills;
- Fields also went 4-for-4 with completions to Garrett Wilson, Breece Hall, Jeremy Ruckert and Mason Taylor. On those plays, Hall made a diving catch and Fields did a good job of getting the ball out fast and handling pressure, although he perhaps held it too long once or twice;
- Arian Smith was impressing with his ability to get separation – on one play burning Azareye’h Thomas deep, although the pass was overthrown;
- Later, Fields eluded pressure and hit an off-balance throw to Wilson, his second option for 20, then found Taylor underneath with good timing;
- The non-starters also had some success on a Tyrod Taylor to Xavier Gipson tight window connection and a Brady Cook to Kene Nwangwu pass;
- Zack Kuntz had a catch down the middle for a big gain and probable touchdown; and
- On field goals, Caden Davis made all three but Anders Carlson had one blocked.
