The New York Jets have finally fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. This move was weeks, if not months, overdue, as it’s been pretty apparent for quite some time that team’s defensive unit was grossly underperforming this season. Yesterday’s 48 points allowed against Jacksonville was apparently too many even for the team that’s going to miss the playoffs for 15 straight years.
Wilks, 56, joined the Gang Green before the start of this season, previously serving as Arizona’ head coach for one season (3-13 record) and Carolina’s interim head coach in 2022 (6-6 record). Wilks’ Jets defense is ranked 20th in the league in yards allowed per game and 30th in points allowed per game. They also have the league worst -17 turnover differential and are the only team in the league without a single interception (the second worst team has 5 INTs).
