Week one is in the books, let’s overreact to everything! As is typical of fans and media, each week, we are gonna overreact to the events of week one. Why not? It’s fun, and who cares if the conclusions have any basis in fact? Let’s get to the silliness. Here is the JetNation NFL Power Rankings – top 10 edition.
NFL Power Rankings
-
Philadelphia Eagles 1-0
Overreaction: Yeah, the Eagles won, but they will not repeat as champs.
Let’s relax before we count the Eagles out. They got just 60 yards rushing from Saquon, and they still won the game. The Eagles didn’t dominate the Cowboys as many expected, but Philly is still a solid bet to win the NFC again. The real concern is the losses in the front seven from last season. The Eagles did not register a sack in week one.
-
Washington Commanders 1-0
Overreaction: The Commanders are going to win the NFC East.
The Commanders were impressive in week one, but let us consider the opposition. The NFC is a two-team race, but we are far from conceding that Washington has gained enough on Philly to crown the Commanders as the favorites for the division.
-
Buffalo Bills 1-0
Overreaction: The Bills are the best team in the AFC.
Coming from behind Sunday night was impressive, but why were they so far down to begin with? On a neutral field, is Buffalo clearly better than Baltimore? I can’t imagine the Ravens make the same mistakes they did the next time these two face off. Buffalo has much to address from Sunday night before we make them the AFC favorites.
-
Green Bay Packers 1-0
Overreaction: The Packers have dethroned the Lions in the NFC North.
It was an impressive win for Green Bay, but we do not think Detroit’s window is closed just yet. 188 yards passing and 78 rushing is not going to get it done for Green Bay every week. It was a great division win to start the season, but the next go-round for these two will look much different.
-
Baltimore Ravens 0-1
Overreaction: The Ravens secondary has not improved since last season.
Blowing the lead on Sunday night was a huge disappointment, but I cannot put it all on the secondary. The Bills had to throw it 46 times to pull off the comeback. The Baltimore secondary will show it has improved since last season. What is still unknown is whether the secondary has improved enough to take the conference.
-
Kansas City Chiefs 0-1
Overreaction: The Chiefs Super Bowl window is closed.
As I heard a famous college coach say on many Saturday mornings, “Not so fast, my friend.” Kansas City still has the best player in the league. It is not a good idea to ask him to win all by himself every week, but the Chiefs are more than capable of taking their division for the five hundredth season in a row and rolling through the conference playoffs. There are issues with the offense, but I am not ready to declare Mahomes and Andy Reid over.
-
Detroit Lions 0-1
Overreaction: The Lions hangover from the disappointing playoff loss is going to plague them all year.
There might have been some lingering effects of the playoff loss to Washington, but the Lions are far too talented not to be a factor. The offense should wake up for this week’s home tilt against Chicago. The pain of last year’s ending will fade, and Detroit will be a problem in the NFC.
-
Los Angeles Rams 1-0
Overreaction: The Rams cannot run it enough to be a factor over the long term.
The Rams are not going to be prolific on the ground this season, but it is wrong to think they do not have all they need to contend. The ground struggles would be enough to limit most teams’ ambitions, but most teams do not have the Rams’ defense. Los Angeles may be even better this season, and they were a handful a year ago. The Rams will be a pass-first offense, but they will also be around at the end if the defense and Stafford stay healthy.
-
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 1-0
Overreaction: The Bucs will run away with the NFC South.
Week one was a success for the Bucs’ “emergency” offensive line, but this story has not seen an ending yet for Tampa. The injury to stud tackle Tristan Wirfs, and the shuffling that the Bucs will have to do to deal with it, can easily derail Tampa’s hopes. If the Bucs can survive until Wirfs returns and find stability along the line, we love their chances to take the weak NFC South, but if things do not settle down, it will get dicey for the Bucs.
-
Los Angeles Chargers 1-0
Overreaction: The Chargers have taken the mantle from the Chiefs in the AFC West.
We have already detailed how it’s too soon to bury the Chiefs. A neutral field win is not enough to nail KC’s coffin shut. The Chargers should be a major factor in the conference, but we thought that last year. Harbaugh has not been able to get this team to turn the corner and become an elite club. There is still not a lot of firepower on offense despite the gifted young quarterback calling the signals. We need to see more before we give up on the Chiefs in the AFC West.

New York Jets 0-1
I remain optimistic about this version of the Jets despite the franchise’s continued uncanny ability to find a loss when a win is in hand.
