The New York Jets didn’t make a flashy pick in the first round, but they’re doing what needs to be done to keep Aaron Rodgers upright.
With the 11th overall pick, the Jets selected Penn State offensive tackle Olu Fashanu. He’s widely considered one of the best prospects in this draft.
Fashanu allowed just one sack while at Penn State. His upside is undeniable.
Judging by the reactions on social media, NFL fans love that New York valued offensive tackle over pass catcher. After all, the Jets were linked to Georgia tight end Brock Bowers.
“The Jets make the smart move and take Penn State OT Olu Fashanu with pick No. 11,” Ari Meirov said. “Protection for Aaron Rodgers is first and foremost for this team.”
“The New York Jets add protection up front for QB Aaron Rodgers and draft Penn State OT Olu Fashanu,” Kyle Yates said. “Good pick.”
“Smart move by the Jets, Congrats OLU,” another person wrote. “Protecting Rodgers had to be the priority.”
The Jets are just a few years removed from wasting a first-round pick on Mehki Becton. They need to make sure they properly develop Fashanu.
Besides, the Jets can add offensive playmakers later on in the draft.
