Entering the 2025 season, questions were looming surrounding the Jets’ wide receiver position, especially at the WR2 spot. As the Jets and future Hall of Famer Davante Adams parted ways, the Jets sent the message that Garrett Wilson is the team’s WR1. Another indicator of Wilson being the team’s WR1 was when they extended him to a four-year $130 million deal. With all that being said, the WR2 job was left open for the taking. Adonai Mitchell and John Metchie III are changing the conversation about this position.
As the season went on, Tyler Johnson, Josh Reynolds, Arian Smith, Xavier Gipson, and Allen Lazard took opportunities filling in for the Jets’ WR2 spot. Tyler Johnson and Josh Reynolds are now on injured reserve, Xavier Gipson was released after a costly Week 1 kickoff return fumble against the Steelers, and Allen Lazard and Arian Smith have yet to make a significant impact on offense.
To top it all off, Garrett Wilson found his way on injured reserve with a knee injury, leaving the Jets’ wide receiver position in shambles. As the trade deadline was approaching and the wide receiver position was in dire need to be addressed, Jets GM Darren Mougey couldn’t sit back and let the offense struggle with the lack of playmakers at the wide receiver position. AD Mitchell and John Metchie III would soon come to the rescue.
Adonai Mitchell is a wide receiver who has become an unsung hero for the Jets. The Jets traded Sauce Gardner to the Colts around the trade deadline; they acquired two first-round picks, along with WR AD Mitchell. Mitchell is a player who was not a throw-in piece of the Sauce Gardner trade; the Jets wanted him. They saw the skill set and potential that Mitchell can bring to the wide receiver room.
It was a shaky start to his Jets tenure as he had multiple drops and only one catch in his Jets debut against the New England Patriots in week 11. But soon after, he would start to heat up. His breakout performance came in week 13 against the Atlanta Falcons when he caught 8 passes for 102 yards and a 52-yard TD catch. While Garrett Wilson is on IR, Mitchell has stepped in as the Jets’ no. 1 target, with his target share rising each game. He had 6 against New England, 7 against Baltimore, and 12 against Atlanta. Luckily, with Tyrod Taylor at quarterback, Mitchell’s skill set is being utilized and not wasted, as he’s a serious deep threat who throws defenses off balance and excels at crisp route-running.
In the Michael Carter II trade to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Jets acquired WR John Metchie III. Metchie has faced a lot of adversity in his football career. In college, he suffered a torn ACL in the SEC Championship game against the Georgia Bulldogs. After being drafted in the second round of the 2022 NFL by the Houston Texans, Metchie would be diagnosed with Leukemia, missing his entire rookie season, as he was focused on treatment and recovery. These life challenges tested Metchie’s character, but that didn’t stop him from playing the game he loves. When he finally hit the field, it was hard for him to get playing time, as he’s been bounced around from the Texans, Eagles, and now in the Jets WR room. Since joining the Jets, Metchie has contributed on offense as he scored a receiving TD against the Patriots and Ravens. He’s found ways to get open and move the chains as he gets open on short routes, beating defenders one-on-one, giving Tyrod Taylor an easy option in the passing game. Last week, he had a few drops against the Falcons, but miscues happened. Metchie is another Darren Mougey player who has contributed and will look to be a part of the solution to the WR room.
In the offseason, the Jets should add one more wide receiver to complete the room. They could go the draft route and look to take prospects like Jordyn Tyson (Arizona State), Carnell Tate (Ohio State), Denzel Boston (Washington), and Makai Lemon (USC). There’s also the free agent route, where they can sign a WR. Next year’s free agent wide receivers include Jakobi Meyers, Jauan Jennings, Rashid Shaheed, Deebo Samuel, and Christian Kirk.
When Garrett Wilson comes off injured reserve, this wide receiver room gives the Jets a fighting chance in games compared to what it looked like in week 1. Adonai Mitchell looks like he can be the WR2 the Jets have been looking for, and he keeps getting better each game he plays, while John Metchie III looks like another weapon. The sky’s the limit for this Jets offense when having an efficient QB under center, so that the offensive weapons can utilize their talents and showcase what they can contribute to the team.
As the season progresses, the better we can evaluate the WR room going forward. This Sunday’s matchup features the Jets debuting their new rivalry uniforms against one of their division rivals in the Miami Dolphins; kickoff is at 1 PM.
