Did Jets Drop the Ball With Breece Hall?

January 5, 2026 by Jet Nation

Jets running back Breece Hall should be suiting up for the final game of the 2025 season in the wilderness of Highmark Stadium just outside of Buffalo today, but that’s not going to happen.  It’s entirely possible that last week’s game, one that saw Hall top 1,000 yards for the first time in his career, will have been his final contest as a Jet.  And if it is, the Jets deserve some criticism for wasting an asset that could have landed them a draft choice.

It has been widely reported that the Kansas City Chiefs offered the Jets a fourth-round draft choice for Hall’s services at the trade deadline.  In search of a third-round pick, the Jets declined the offer and moved forward with the talented running back in a lost season.  Now, with Hall’s free agency pending, the Jets could lose the back and walk away empty handed.

The @nyjets do not have a viable WR2.

They also have one of the best receiving backs in the NFL in Breece Hall.

On a day when the offense couldn’t get anything going, Hall had a grand total of 2 catches for 9 yards.

While some have suggested the Jets the Jets are a lock to land a compensatory pick in the 2027 draft if they let Hall walk, that’s not happening.  Currently projected to have roughly $75 million in cap space this offseason, Gang Green will surely add enough premium free agents to offset the loss of Hall as far as the league’s com pick formula is concerned.  This means there will be no pick for the former second-round pick.

His time with the Jets has been managed so poorly that it’s fair to say we still have not seen Hall at his best as a pro.  Despite one coaching staff after another professing to use Hall as a multi-dimensional back, that simply hasn’t turned out to be the case.  Time after time we watch the Jets offense sputter while Hall gets a handful of carries and can’t get a target in the passing game.  The frustration for Hall has clearly been mounting, and with free agency so close he can taste it, he took to social media the other day to criticize his team’s inability to move the football.  “They out here making offense look overly easy” said Hall on x just a few days ago.

They out here making offense look overly easy…

A few hours earlier, his Jets had managed just one touchdown, how own, in a 42-10 drubbing at the hands of the Patriots.  In the past, Breece Hall has fired off some cryptic tweets that have brought in to question his desire to remain a Jet, but there was no room for misinterpretation this time around.  The Jets can’t move the football through the air.  They struggle to move it consistently on the ground.  Now Hall has had enough.

If Andy Reid still wants Breece Hall in Kansas City, we may finally see him at his best.  If the Jets are able to tag Hall and force him to stay, they may wish they’d taken Reid’s offer of a fourth-rounder and moved on with their lives.
