Two weeks after becoming a top 10 pick, the New York Jets have agreed to a contract with Armand Membou. The three-year starter from the University of Missouri was selected with the seventh overall pick. At the time, Membou became the second offensive tackle selected in the top ten. Will Campbell, out of LSU, was picked fourth overall by the Patriots. Today, the right tackle has agreed on a rookie deal valued at $31.9 million over four years. The All-SEC second-team honoree is expected to become the team’s starting right tackle early in his career.

The hiring of Aaron Glenn as head coach has created a new atmosphere in Florham Park, New Jersey. Looking to help them turn over a new leaf, Glenn took with him a philosophy he saw firsthand with the Detroit Lions. If the Jets want to end their playoff drought, they must ensure the offensive line is solidified. Despite their poor performance overall, one thing the Jets showed was promise in their o-line. Entering the offseason, they returned four of their five starters.

While the interior of the line is solidified between guards John Simpson & Alijah Vera-Tucker, with center Joe Tippmann in the middle. This time last year, New York selected Penn State left tackle Olu Fashanu with the 11th overall pick. The former Big-10 offensive lineman of the year has all the makings of a premier blindside tackle. However, a hole remained at right tackle with Morgan Moses departing in free agency for the Patriots. Initially, fans were concerned that newly signed Chukuwuma Okorafor would start after a rough 2024 season. Instead, general manager Darren Mougey knew what had to be done.
Jets get an All-SEC Right Tackle under 22 years old
When the clock was ticking, an offseason of suspense was settled when Armand Membou picked up Darren Mougey’s phone call. The former Missouri Tiger started three seasons for Eli Drinkwitz with over 35 games of experience. After turning heads with a sub-five-second forty-yard time at the NFL Combine, his name shot up boards. While Membou’s height has drawn concerns, he makes up for it in explosiveness and weight distribution to be a technically sound pass blocker. He’s also shown his adaptiveness as a run blocker, including creating running lanes for running back Cody Schrader’s 1,627 rushing-yard season in 2023.
The addition of Membou brings a lot of excitement. Last season, the Jets’ offense was too pass-oriented to appease quarterback Aaron Rodgers. In 2024, the Jets threw the second-most pass attempts in the league. As a result, they finished second-to-last in rush attempts. Looking to utilize the running backs more, Membou adds an instant starter at right tackle. Allowing him to play next to a veteran guard like Alijah Vera-Tucker will help his learning curve. In addition, it benefits new quarterback Justin Fields, who can get more creative as a runner on the boundary, knowing Membou is protecting him.
By adding Armand Membou, the Jets could have a great offensive line long-term. Barring any major health concerns, the five pieces of the offensive line can gel together to be a respectable unit. If it works out, the team could turn some heads with a major bounceback season from Breece Hall. For now, the fanbase can rejoice knowing the team is performing the right steps to build them up.
