On this week’s episode of Flight 29, featuring former Jets running back Bilal Powell and Rami Lavi, the pair kicked around some ideas in regards to some of this year’s top signal callers expected to enter the NFL draft. When it got to the topic of Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza, Powell may have opened some eyes when he said Mendoza “Reminds me of Sam Darnold”.
Jets fans will of course be torn on that comparison just as they were torn over whether or not the Jets should have let Darnold go, which is a point some fans still argue to this day.
Powell then followed that up by saying Mendoza isn’t a quarterback that he would use an early pick on this season if he were the Jets, saying the team has to address the defensive line. It may be a take that fans won’t appreciate, but if the Jets don’t trade up for Mendoza, defensive line or safety might make sense in their spot.
The Jets currently own the seventh-worst record in the NFL at 3-9, which is where they would currently pick. But with games coming up against the Saints, Dolphins, Jaguars and week 18 against the Patriots and Bills, who may be resting starters, two more wins couldn’t be ruled out. Should the Jets manage to finish with five wins, they may be selecting a player closer to tenth in the draft than first, which is what many Jets fans were hoping for just a few short days ago.
