The New York Jets came really close to winning their first game of the 2020 NFL regular season on Monday night. Unfortunately (or fortunately, for fans interested in draft position) the team fell short in the final seconds.
New England defeated New York, 30-27, on ESPN’s Monday Night Football last night. The Patriots made a game-winning field goal as time expired to keep the Jets winless at 0-9 on the season. New England, meanwhile, improved to 3-5 on the year.
The Jets, led by backup quarterback Joe Flacco, played pretty well against the Patriots. New York led for most of the game but was unable to hold onto a lead late in the second half. Cam Newton led the Patriots on a game-winning field goal drive with less than a minute to play.
New York head coach Adam Gase had a two-word reaction to the loss.
“It hurts,” he said.

Most Jets fans are probably rooting for losses at this point, though. New York remains in prime position to select Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence at No. 1 overall next spring.

Lawrence is widely expected to leave school early and become the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Monday night’s loss could help the Jets land him.
