Wide Receiver Is Still a Need for the New York Giants

May 28, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

The New York Giants’ wide receiver room is in a state of transition. For the first time since Odell Beckham, they finally have a bona fide WR1 in Malik Nabers. From there, they re-signed veteran Darius Slayton to a three-year deal. Slayton has been a steady force for the Giants since 2019, but people question his ability to be anything more than a WR3. Slot receiver Wan’dale Robinson has brought mixed results, and also entering the final year of his rookie contract this season. Former third-rounder Jailyn Hyatt couldn’t get on the field, even with the explosiveness he displayed in stints in 2023. To help the offense, Joe Schoen might consider adding a capable veteran receiver who is more than a camp body. Here are some veteran wide receiver options for the Giants this late in the offseason.

Feb 25, 2025; Indianapolis, IN, USA; New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen speaks during the NFL Scouting Combine at the Indiana Convention Center.

Wide Receiver Is Still a Need for the New York Giants

1. Gabe Davis (Age 26)

  • 2024 Team: Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Status: Released in May 2025 after one season
  • Overview: Last offseason, Davis signed a three-year, $39 million contract with the Jaguars. They released him after a torn meniscus limited him to 10 games in the 2024 season. Despite the setback, his prior performance with the Buffalo Bills showcased his deep-threat capability, making him an intriguing option for teams seeking to add a vertical element to their passing game. Furthermore, Davis is a capable blocker on the outside. He can help the Giants in a zone-based running scheme, where they had the most success in 2024. Not to mention, Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll were in Buffalo during Davis’s peak in 2021.  He knows the playbook, and at 26, he has the best chance at revitalizing his career on this list.

2. Keenan Allen (Age 33)

  • 2024 Team: Chicago Bears
  • Status: Unrestricted Free Agent
  • Overview: Allen recorded 70 receptions for 744 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024, serving as a reliable target in a struggling Bears offense. His precise route-running and experience could benefit teams with young quarterbacks or teams who need a dependable slot receiver. At best, he’s an insurance policy for Wan’dale Robinson in 2025 and maybe 2026. Robinson is more athletic than Allen, but at 5 feet 7, he’s a limited player. In addition, who else on the Giants’ depth chart can play slot receiver full-time?

3. Amari Cooper (Age 31)

  • 2024 Teams: Cleveland Browns / Buffalo Bills
  • Status: Unrestricted Free Agent
  • Overview: Unfortunately, Cooper’s 2024 season was marred by injuries and transitions between teams, culminating in 44 receptions for 547 yards and four touchdowns. His trade to Buffalo seemed like a match made in heaven. The Bills needed a true WR1 to compete against the Chiefs, but Cooper’s production severely dropped. In eight games, Cooper had 20 catches for 297 yards and two touchdowns. However, his previous seasons demonstrated his capability as a top-tier receiver. So the question is whether or not Cooper is a reliable NFL receiver at this point in his career. Some veteran outside receivers find productive roles for themselves in their early 30s. Cooper hopes to be one of those this season. He could serve as a valuable addition to any team seeking a veteran presence and route-running proficiency.

Though they’re far from difference makers, these receivers offer varying skill sets and experiences that could complement the Giants’ current roster, providing depth and mentorship to younger players. While none of these options will likely become pro-bowlers, they can still help a thin wide receiver room. This late in free agency, these are the best wide receiver options for the Giants.
