Brian Daboll told reporters today that Cam Skattebo will not require any additional surgery. Assuming this is true and holds up, it is great news. “I would have given the likelihood of no further surgery a 15%-20% chance,” said Wonder. “Assuming the reports of a ruptured deltoid ligament, they ironically had the opportunity to have easier access to repair that ligament during the surgery to fix the dislocated ankle. While rupturing is not good, it is a relatively easier ligament to repair than an ACL. It sounds like the ligament rupture was more significant than the fractured fibula.” Wonder is not an MD but he is very familiar with a range of sports injuries. “I would say that the surgical skill is about 70% and the rehab/physical therapy skill + Cam Skattebo’s efforts will be the balance of 30% in determining the outcome of the procedure.” This will be a long recovery but without the need for additional surgery, it is a total win.
Further reports indicate he should be available for OTAs and minicamp. Wonder puts some cold water on that, saying he will still be rehabbing but may be on the sidelines with non-contact drills. Even so, everything points to him being able to play Week 1 next season, which would be amazing.
