The Giants Make a Ton of Sense for Recently-Fired Head Coach

January 9, 2026 by Last Word On Pro Football

As every NFL fan knows, the Baltimore Ravens recently fired head coach John Harbaugh. It’ll be interesting to see which team he heads to next. Perhaps the New York Giants make the most sense.

The 4-13 Giants certainly didn’t have one of the league’s best records this season. However, they’re an up-and-coming team that possesses a ton of potential. They need a great coach like John Harbaugh to lead them to the next level.

The Giants Make a Ton of Sense for the Recently-Fired John Harbaugh

His Career in Baltimore

The Baltimore Ravens hired John Harbaugh on January 19, 2008. During his first season as head coach, he led the team to an 11-5 record and a playoff berth. In the postseason, he led Baltimore to wins over the Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans before losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game.

Harbaugh guided the Ravens to a 12–4 record in 2011. That season, the team ultimately lost to the New England Patriots in the AFC Title Game.

In 2012, Baltimore finished with a 10–6 record and won the AFC North division. After defeating the Indianapolis Colts in the Wild Card Round and the Denver Broncos during the Divisional Round, the Ravens beat the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game. That season, Harbaugh guided the team to a victory in Super Bowl XLVII over the San Francisco 49ers (coached by his brother, Jim Harbaugh).

John Harbaugh’s Ravens failed to make the playoffs from 2015 to 2017. However, they missed the postseason just twice from 2018-2025. This season, the Ravens narrowly failed to clinch the AFC North and a playoff spot as they lost to the Steelers in Week 18.

During his 18 seasons in Baltimore, Harbaugh had a 180-113 regular-season record, 12 playoff appearances, four AFC title games, and a Super Bowl victory.

Why the Giants?

Jason Owens of Yahoo Sports wrote about Harbaugh potentially going to the Giants:

“Few teams in recent years have failed to find stability at head coach quite like the Giants. Since Tom Coughlin retired in 2016, the Giants have whiffed with Ben McAdoo, Pat Shurmur, Joe Judge and Brian Daboll, in addition to employing Steve Spagnuolo and Mike Kafka in the interim. If you’re counting, that’s six head coaches in 10 seasons, and the instability has played out on the field. The Giants have posted just two winning seasons and made two playoff appearances in those 10 years. No coach other than Mike Tomlin screams stability quite like Harbaugh, who coached the Ravens for 18 seasons.”

Harbaugh will have plenty of options. But why do the Giants make sense? Well, they possess the talent to eventually become one of the league’s best teams. They’re led by a young franchise quarterback in Jaxson Dart. The former Ole Miss star is coming off a great rookie year, throwing for 2,272 yards and 15 touchdowns. New York also has building blocks like wide receiver Malik Nabers and running back Cam Skattebo. Plus, they own the fifth overall pick in the draft, which they could use to take a talented wideout like Ohio State’s Carnell Tate.

All the Giants need is an elite coach like John Harbaugh to lead them to the postseason.
