SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS 34 – NEW YORK GIANTS 24…
Another game, another loss for the pathetic New York Giants. The Giants lost 34-24 to the San Francisco 49ers in a game that was not as close as the final score. And despite the game being played at MetLife Stadium, 49er fans dominated the stands and made it feel like an away game. For the third year in a row, the Giants are 2-7 after nine games.
Both teams came into the game missing key starters, but the 49ers were able to adapt and the Giants did not. Worse, it’s clear that the Giants’ defense has collapsed. And the mistakes keep piling up with dropped passes and missed tackles.
In terms of team stats, the 49ers were superior in first downs (25 to 19), total net yards (380 to 296), net yards rushing (159 to 117), net yards passing (221 to 179), and time of possession (33:11 to 26:49). The Giants did win the turnover battle 1-0.
Both teams exchanged touchdowns on their opening drives, with New York striking first. The Giants drove 64 yards in 10 plays with quarterback Jaxson Dart throwing to tight end Theo Johnson for a 15-yard touchdown catch, on a play where Johnson bullied his way into the end zone. However, the lead was short-lived as the 49ers, led by backup quarterback Mac Jones, drove 68 yards in 12 plays. Jones found running back Christian McCaffrey for a 5-yard touchdown reception.
The Giants went three-and-out on their second drive, but the 49ers kept up their momentum, driving the field again, this time 80 yards in eight plays. Jones threw an 11-yard touchdown pass and San Francisco was up 14-7 early in the second quarter.
The Giants punted twice and the 49ers once before San Francisco added to their lead with a 54-yard field goal at the 2-minute warning to go up 17-7. The Giants went three-and-out, but got the ball right back when Jones was sacked by outside linebacker Brian Burns, forcing a fumble that was recovered by outside linebacker Abdul Carter at the San Francisco 27-yard line with 33 seconds left before halftime. However, the Giants could get no closer and place kicker Graham Gano missed the 45-yard field goal.
At the break, the 49ers still led 17-7.
The 49ers received the ball to start the second half and immediately extended their lead with a 13-play, 46-yard drive that ended with a 33-yard field goal. The Giants responded with a field goal drive of their own, gaining 64 yards in eight plays but settling for a 22-yard field goal after facing a 1st-and-goal from the 9-yard line. 49ers 20 – Giants 10.
After both teams punted, the 49ers started to pull away early in the fourth quarter with a 9-play, 76-yard possession that ended with an 18-yard touchdown run by running back Brian Robinson. To New York’s credit, they did respond with a 7-play, 65-yard drive of their own with Dart rushing for a 6-yard touchdown. 49ers 27 – Giants 17.
But again, the New York defense was atrocious as the 49ers easily drove 60 yards in six plays, McCaffrey finishing the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run that extended the lead to 17 points again, 34-17 with four minutes to play.
The Giants made the game look more respectable with a final touchdown drive of their own in the final minutes, traveling 69 yards in nine plays. Wide receiver Gunner Olszewski caught a 24-yard touchdown from Dart. The 49ers then ran out the final 80 seconds of the games.
Dart finished 24-of-33 for 191 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also was the leading rusher and ran the ball eight times for 56 yards and a touchdown. His leading receiver was wideout Wan’Dale Robinson, who caught nine passes for 46 yards. Wide receiver Darius Slayton also had five catches for 62 yards, but dropped a touchdown. Running back Devin Singletary and Tyrone Trace were limited to 61 yards combined on 13 carries.
The defense gave up over 30 points for the third week in a row, 105 total.
