As Eli Manning was grilled over his tenuous future Monday, another quarterback with ostensible Giants ties was mulling his own over 2,000 miles away.
The alluring sight of Russell Wilson tormenting opposing defenses alongside Saquon Barkley began to emerge in the minds of demoralized Big Blue fans this offseason, as trickling tidbits signaled the 30-year-old could be the one — rather than an unproven quarterback prospect in April’s draft — to replace the longtime face of the franchise.
Those dreams were sacked in the wee hours Tuesday, when a cozied Wilson announced his new Seahawks contract: a four-year, $140 million extension that will make him the highest-paid player in the league.
The speculation, first tossed to the masses by Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd, indicated Wilson’s wife, pop-star Ciara, believed a move to the glamorous Big Apple would propel her career like only the city can. Former NFL head coach Jack Del Rio added to the noise by suggesting Wilson would be traded this offseason, and then Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu recently tweeted out of nowhere: “Russ wants New York.”
As it turned out, he didn’t enough, or even at all.
“Russell loves this town, this team and these fans and part of the compromise involved his affection for all things Seattle,” Wilson’s agent, Mark Rodgers, told the Seattle Times. “The idea of playing anywhere else was not as appealing as playing right here, the place he and his family call home.”
As for Ciara’s purported affection for New York, she didn’t seem too upset about her husband remaining a favorite of the Seahawks’ rabid fan base, tweeting after waking Tuesday morning: “Soooo proud of my love @DangeRussWilson, So excited Seattle is home! God is so good. The hardest working man I know! You inspire me so much! #GoHawks @Seahawks.”
Now it seems the closest Wilson will get to becoming a New York fan favorite will be as a Yankee, the franchise for which he’s dabbled in spring training since being drafted into MLB in 2010.
As for the Giants, it’s time to return to the draft board to seek the heir Manning knows is coming.
