RONNIE BARNES NO LONGER HEAD TRAINER…
The dramatic changes continue for the New York Giants. A day after we learned that the the team fired Senior Vice President of Football Operations and Strategy Kevin Abrams, Senior Vice President and Medical Services/Head Athletic Trainer Ronnie Barnes will have his role “shifted within the organization.” Barnes apparently will now “oversee” the medical services department, but there will be a new head athletic trainer and restructured staff.
Barnes joined the Giants in 1976, becoming the head athletic trainer in 1980. He was promoted to the position of Vice President of Medical Services in 2003 and to Senior Vice President of Medical Services in 2011.
ASSISTANT COACHING INTERVIEWS BEGIN…
As to be expected, Head Coach John Harbaugh has begun interviewing candidates for all of the coordinator and position coach vacancies on the New York Giants.
- Minnesota Vikings Defensive Pass Game Coordinator Daronte Jones was interviewed on Thursday for the team’s defensive coordinator position.
- The Giants have requested permission from the Baltimore Ravens to interview Assistant Head Coach/Running Backs Coach Willie Taggart for the team’s offensive coordinator position.
Like head coaching vacancies, NFL teams are required to interview minority candidates in order to abide by the “Rooney Rule.”
GIANTS SIGN DEFENSIVE LINEMAN…
The Giants have signed DL DeMarvin Leal to a reserve/future contract. The 25-year old, 6’4”, 290-pound Leal was originally drafted in the 3rd round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. In four seasons with the Steelers, Leal has played in 32 regular-season games with six starts, but most of that playing time came in 2022-2023 with just nine games and no starts the past two seasons. The Steelers released him from their Practice Squad earlier this month.
