Is Tommy DeVito’s Future with the New York Giants In Jeopardy?

August 24, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After a strong performance in the New York Giants’ final preseason game against the New England Patriots on Thursday, Tommy DeVito‘s future is uncertain. Discussions about his spot on the roster will occur before the 53-man roster is announced this week. In what many say was his final appearance for the Giants, DeVito threw for 198 yards and three touchdowns.

He would lead the team to a convincing 42-10 victory. To some, this marked a return to what fans saw from DeVito during his six-game stint as a starter during his rookie season in 2023.

Taking over from the injured  Daniel Jones, DeVito gradually became a fan favorite, both on and off the field. He represented something that the Giants did not have in Jones: a fun personality. Playing into his Jersey roots, having grown up locally, he became known for his hand gesture celebration, giving the fanbase something to smile about. His three-game winning streak, including a primetime win over the Packers, showed that DeVito was able to lead a football team.

However, those wins, while helpful in the short term, would come back to haunt the team later on. The wins took the Giants out of contention for a top draft pick in what was a very quarterback-heavy 2024 Draft class.

In the end, they had the number six pick and went with wide receiver Maalik Nabers. Some argue that if DeVito hadn’t won those games, the Giants could very much have Jayden Daniels as their starting quarterback now. DeVito returned in 2024 as part of the ongoing carousel of quarterbacks after Jones’ departure, but could not repeat his success.

This year, he is very much the odd one out of an emerging quarterback room. During the offseason, the Giants brought in veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, who will likely act as bridge quarterbacks. The drafting of  Jaxson Dart, seen as the next franchise quarterback of the team, has only made things harder for DeVito. DeVito does not factor into the long-term plans for the team.

Keeping him on the roster would occupy a spot the Giants could use for a player in a position that needs extra depth. This means that by the end of the week, Tommy DeVito will no longer be a New York Giant.

Where could Tommy DeVito end up?

As for his future destination, the outlook is not clear. There is a chance that DeVito could very much resign with the Giants’ practice squad. This will allow him to keep the local fanbase he’s created and remain available if one of the quarterbacks suffers a serious injury.

However, there may be interest from other teams. While DeVito has not played much, he has shown that he can win games. This may be enough for some teams to take a chance on him. Whatever happens, don’t expect to see Tommy Devito on the Giants’ 53-man roster when it is announced on Thursday.
