A couple of beat reporters inform us that Schoen is 50/50 on being kept on as GM. It’s fairly clear he doesn’t deserve to return. In the bye presser, it was apparent that he knew his chances weren’t that good. All the Giants have done since then is remind us that changes are needed. I said a year ago that Daboll and Schoen should be replaced. Yes, Schoen did well in the draft, but his free agent signings have been mostly miserable. Combined with a lack of depth, it’s fairly obvious there is too much failure to ignore if you bring him back. To hear that it’s “50/50” is in itself an indictment. I’ll let Mara bury himself should he actually bring Schoen back.
Schoen is not Gettleman. He has a better process. Yet he’s lost objectivity on his own roster. A new GM will freely admit mistakes and move on. We noted how Roseman took his losses on Wentz, a courageous and honest move that opened him up to much criticism. He (and his franchise) came out stronger and better for it. Schoen lacks that ability to be honest with his roster. How many times has he and the Giants paid for overpaying on Gano, leaving the franchise in such an embarrassing state with its kicking game? It’s but one of too many examples of his mismanagement.
Mara needs to step down. We won’t get that. That’s the root of the Giants problems. We’ve already discussed this in prior posts. The Tisches are smart enough owners to know not to be involved. They own. That’s correct. Yet every year they keep tacitly approving of Mara as President, that isn’t helping their organization.
Some are asking about Mendoza vs Dart. If the Giants somehow lose to the Raiders they may get the 1.01 pick. Dart is a franchise QB. Mendoza may be one too. Dart IS one right now. Let a desperate franchise pay up dearly for the 1.01 pick and trade down. When you are done trading down, trade down some more. When finished, trade down again entirely out of Round 1. You’ll have ~5 Round 2 equivalent picks. Get a

The Giants have plenty of playmakers. They need the solid starters to finish the product. Burns, Thibodeaux, Lawrence, Carter, Dart, Nabers, Thomas, and Skattebo are a nucleus for a STRONG Head Coach. Get the pieces. Do you honestly think Schoen is capable of seeing this, trading down so many times to fill up what he has not filled up? Schoen has only traded up, notably for Hyatt, Banks and Dart. I give Daboll the credit on Dart. What we are left with is Schoen’s mistakes. It’s time to move on.
