Giving the NFC East a pass

We’ve all heard the jokes and seen the tweets and the memes about the NFC East. Or as some like to call it, the NFC Least.

And, while it is probably the worst division in football, I’d like to give it a pass for this year.

NFC East standings:

1. Philly — 3-4-1
2. Washington — 2-6
3. Dallas — 2-6
4. GIANTS — 2-7 pic.twitter.com/wGTZTKswNJ

Aside from that wonderful plume of smoke, you see the standings in the NFC East. The NFC East just isn’t itself this season.  First off, I sort of blame playing football in a pandemic.  While most are grateful football is happening, you have to admit, it overall has been different playing in a pandemic. Lots of adjustments have been made to allow games to be possible that are outside of a football team’s usual routines.

But another reason why I’m willing to give the NFC East a break this season is because 3 of the 4 teams have new coaches this season.  While yes, two of them are veteran coaches, they’re still new and getting a chance to see what they have in terms of the talent on their team. They haven’t gotten a chance to do too much to make it the team that they want to see. Oh yeah, and one of them just finished treatment for cancer.

The New York Giants and the Washington Football Team both have young quarterbacks that are really just learning and have the weight of a fanbase on them.  Besides, I think as fans, we tend to put tons of pressure on young QBs, but that’s another post altogether.

Then there’s the injury bug that has hit the Dallas Cowboys the hardest. While it may not be a lot of injured players, the injury to their starting quarterback, Dak Prescott, is probably the hardest to overcome.  After their backup QB, Andy Dalton got hurt, it’s really all downhill from here.  The Giants also have lost running back Saquon Barkley to injury as well.

I think that that is a good reason why the Philadelphia Eagles, despite their not great record, have remained in 1st place.  They have the veteran leadership (yes, it’s been questioned quite a bit..I see you Philly fans) and a veteran quarterback in Carson Wentz.

The bottom line is, I’m willing to give the NFC East a pass this year.

What say you, NFC East fans??
