Area football fans will not have to wait long to get a glimpse of their teams in action against each other, as the Giants face the Jets in a rare preseason opener this summer.
This is the 51st consecutive year the Giants and Jets will meet in the preseason but it will be only the third time the game arrives as the opener. This is because the Giants and Jets also meet in the 2019 regular season. Usually, the Giants-Jets preseason meeting is game No. 3, but the third week is when teams often give their starters increased playing time. The Giants play the AFC East this season and thus will get to see the Jets down the road in a game that counts.
The preseason opener — it is a Giants’ home game at MetLife Stadium — is set for the week of Aug. 8-12. The exact dates and times of the games will be announced at a later date.
In Week 2 (Aug. 15-19), the Giants face the NFC North champion Bears at MetLife Stadium. In Week 3 (Aug. 22-25), the Giants hit the road to face the Bengals in Cincinnati. The Giants close out their preseason with a game against the Super Bowl champion Patriots at Gillette Stadium, most likely on Aug. 29. It is the 15th consecutive summer the Giants and Patriots will meet in the preseason.
In an unusual twist, the Giants play three of their four preseason opponents — the Jets, Bears and Patriots — in the regular season. All three of those games will be road games for the Giants.
