Other Giant observations

Upgraded Giants pass rush no-shows against Vikings in season debut | New York Post

But they recorded just one sack on Sam Darnold on Sunday — by Lawrence, on the second Vikings offensive play — and only two quarterback hits.

Thibodeaux, who tallied 15.5 sacks his first two years in the league after the Giants drafted him No. 5 in 2022, barely registered on the stat sheet. He didn’t record a single tackle, and had just one quarterback hit. Burns, for his part, was a bit more active. He recorded four total tackles, though he failed to really touch Darnold.

If Daniel Jones can’t play any better, NY Giants’ season on the rocks | The Record

It’s the question to which no one seems to have an answer, and that’s a scary development one week into the third year for Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen, even if critics have been shouting the sentiment for months now, years even.

What if there is nothing left for the Giants to fix with Daniel Jones as a starting NFL quarterback, let alone the leader of an offense that was again held out of the end zone and booed mercilessly for its repeated shortcomings?

NY Giants takeaways: Silver linings in short supply as loss to Vikings looks painfully familiar | The Athletic

Daboll didn’t do Jones any favors in his first game as the full-time play caller. There was a painfully conservative sequence in the second quarter when Daboll called consecutive quarterback runs on second-and-5 and third-and-2 from midfield. Jones was stuffed for a 1-yard loss on the third-down carry, and Daboll elected to punt on fourth-and-3 from Minnesota’s 49.

The downfield passing attack that was promised to be a hallmark of the offense was non-existent. Jones didn’t attempt a single pass that traveled 20 or more yards in the air. Jones had two 25-yard completions to rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers on intermediate passes that included a few yards after the catch. The dynamic Nabers was limited to 66 yards on five receptions.

Daniel Jones has 1 win, 2 TD passes and 3 pick-sixes in last two seasons | Pro Football Talk

Since signing a four-year, $160 million contract with the Giants during the 2023 offseason, Jones has only won one game as a starting quarterback. He has thrown only two touchdown passes. And he has thrown three interceptions that were returned for touchdowns.

Throwing more pick-sixes than touchdown passes represents such brutally bad quarterback play that it’s almost hard to believe it’s possible, but that’s what Jones has done. There are three other quarterbacks who have thrown at least three pick-sixes in the last two years, and they’re all bad quarterbacks: Sam Howell, Mac Jones and Bryce Young. But all of them have also thrown at least 10 touchdown passes in the last two seasons. Jones has thrown two touchdown passes in the last two seasons.

For Giants’ Daniel Jones, boos extended well after game ended: ‘I need a million!’ | nj.com

Daniel Jones couldn’t escape the boo-birds even after the Giants’ 28-6 loss at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

Fans waited for Jones by the player’s entrance at the Meadowlands after New York’s season opener. Once he emerged from the stadium, they gave him a piece of their mind.

Notes & Stats: Giants start 5 rookies; all 6 draft picks play | Giants.com

Five rookies started the game for the Giants: wide receiver Malik Nabers, the team’s first-round draft choice and tight end Theo Johnson (fourth round) on offense; safety Tyler Nubin (second round), linebacker Darius Muasau (sixth round) and defensive tackle Elijah Chatman (undrafted) on defense.

This is the 55th season since the 1970 merger, and it’s the first time the Giants a) started five rookies in a season opener, and b) started two rookies on both offense and defense in an opener.

Giants’ Malik Nabers says there’s ‘still a lot of stuff to learn’ after NFL debut | SNY.tv

One of the few bright spots was No. 6 overall pick Malik Nabers, who finished with five receptions for 66 yards, including a long of 25 on his first career catch. The rookie wide receiver was relatively pleased with his performance in his NFL debut, but knows there is a lot of room for improvement.

“I feel like I did pretty well for my first game,” Nabers said. “The tempo slowed down since I first got out there, but still a lot of stuff to learn, still a lot of stuff to go look over the film and fix.”

He added: “We have to catch the ball. We had way too many drops, including myself, I had one. When we get that opportunity to make the plays, we have to make those plays and we didn’t do that today.”

Giants CB Adoree Jackson Calls “B.S.” on Pass Interference Call | SI.com

“[The official] knows it,” the usually accountable and even-keeled Jackson said afterward in the locker room. “That’s why he wouldn’t look at me, wouldn’t talk to me. You saw Addison almost pull my helmet off [and] hug me as I turned and looked for the ball.

“The ref is sorry. He can hear me say that. He needs to be fined, just like they fine us on different things. That was a B.S. call on his behalf. He knows it. I wouldn’t look at me either if I knew I made a bad call. He wouldn’t even look at the [big] screen, so he knows he made a bad call. And he threw it late. Come on.”

Giants’ Week 1 performance makes Saquon, Martindale decisions look even worse for now | The Athletic

Two of the New York Giants’ biggest offseason moves — a messy divorce from defensive coordinator Wink Martindale and letting Saquon Barkley leave in free agency — made the team’s football leadership vulnerable to damaging narratives in a potential make-or-break season.

This week’s opponent

Five takeaways from Washington’s Week 1 loss to Tampa Bay | Commanders.com

It took some time for the Buccaneers to operate smoothly, but it was humming by the end of the afternoon. They put up 392 yards of offense, and that effort was fueled by the explosive plays that they put up. They had nine that went for at least 15 yards.

Commanders Vs. Buccaneers – Studs and Duds | Hogs Haven

Studs: Jayden Daniels – Despite constant pressure all afternoon, Daniles showed his unique athletic ability in being able to avoid that pressure and turn scrambles into positive yards. He gained 88 yards on the ground and scored two touchdowns. He wasn’t torching the Bucs secondary through the air, but he made quick decisions and didn’t turn the ball over. There is a lot to be excited for here.

Dan Quinn: You need to struggle to develop identity | Pro Football Talk

Daniels showed why he’s central to any identity the team plans to build, but Quinn and company will need to look at ways to make sure that he remains on the field for the long run. Daniels’s took several big hits while running and lost his helmet multiple times, including on a late fourth quarter run with the game well out of reach. The Commanders have to balance the rewards that come from Daniels taking off with the ball with calling plays that ensure he will be able to stay in the lineup for the entire season or the struggle will look a lot worse than it did on Sunday.
