Other Giant observations

Joe Schoen, Brian Daboll betting Daniel Jones was Giants’ problem on offense | New York Daily News

The Giants have to be humming in Week 1 right out of the gate — or else.

What stands out most when this Giants offense works out and takes pictures together, however, is how similar they look to last year’s 31st-ranked offense. The only real difference is that it’s Wilson at quarterback, not Jones. If offensive coordinator Mike Kafka calls plays, that would be a key change from last season, when Brian Daboll was on the headset. And running back Tyrone Tracy Jr.’s move ahead of Devin Singletary as the projected Week 1 starter is a shift from 2024.

But the offensive line’s starting five looks like it could be the exact same: Andrew Thomas, Jon Runyan Jr., John Michael Schmitz, Greg Van Roten and Jermaine Eluemunor, left to right. Theo Johnson, Chris Manhertz and Daniel Bellinger are still playing tight end. Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, Wan’Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt still offer the most hope at wide receiver. Even if Nabers is an ascending talent, this plan represents a stunning level of stubbornness from Giants GM Joe Schoen and Daboll on the personnel side.

30. Brian Daboll (Giants). Daboll looked like a wizard in his debut, rejuvenating both Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley en route to a road playoff win. That feels like ages ago, with his record only plummeting since then. Unveiling rookie dual threat Jaxson Dart may well buy him more time, unless the aging Russell Wilson proves to be the serviceable downfield arm he’s been hunting for years.

Giants fans are very happy to have Malik Nabers in the Big Apple, especially after he almost singlehandedly kept their offense afloat on many Sundays in 2024. In the final season of the Daniel Jones era, the quarterback treated Nabers like a life raft amid a torrential storm at sea, force-feeding his younger teammate and allowing Nabers to work his magic. Consider Week 2, when Jones targeted Nabers 18 times to the tune of 10 catches for 127 yards and one touchdown in a close loss to Washington. The other three pass-catchers saw a combined total of nine targets in that game. Nabers was his team’s best option in the passing attack, eminently capable of making defenders look silly. The Giants have desperately needed a receiver with these capabilities since the heyday of Odell Beckham, and they’ve finally found it in Nabers, who was the first Big Blue player to reach 1,000 receiving yards in a season since OBJ did it in 2018. I expect Nabers to land on this list for the next two or three years.

OLB Abdul Carter. The caveat is that it’s hard to get a sense of just how dominant a trenches player can be without pads in the spring, but Carter showed the flashes of why he was the No. 3 pick this year. He has the potential to be a game-wrecker, and the Giants’ outside linebacker room should be its strongest position group thanks to veterans Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux. The question now is how the snaps will be divided between the three and how much moving around Carter will be doing as a versatile player.

The last name to file away is interior offensive lineman Jake Kubas, who got three starts (two at right guard and one at left guard) under his belt late last season as an undrafted rookie out of North Dakota State. He is one of those players who gets mentioned unprompted by teammates and coaches when talking about the state of the offensive line. General manager Joe Schoen said specifically that Greg Van Roten was “really good” for the development of Kubas and was one of the many reasons why they re-signed the veteran.

New York Giants: Tyrone Tracy Jr. After rushing for 839 yards as a rookie, the fifth-round running back has an opportunity to surpass the 1,200-yard mark in an offense that features more efficient quarterback play with veteran leader Russell Wilson set to take over from Daniel Jones. The improved passing game will lead to more light boxes (six or fewer defenders) and wider lanes for the former college wide receiver to scoot through on off-tackle runs and designed cut-back plays. With Wilson also expected to target Tracy frequently on swing, screen and option routes in the pass game, the Giants’ unheralded RB1 could put up massive scrimmage yard totals as a multi-purpose threat from the backfield.

11. Odell’s One-Hander (2014). Odell Beckham Jr. was absent to open his career with the Giants, missing most of his first offseason, plus New York’s first four games, due to injury. By the end of the year, he was literally in the Hall of Fame, his No. 13 jersey displayed on account of his unbelievable one-handed grip on a deep shot from Eli Manning against the rival Dallas Cowboys. This thing was so acrobatic it became something of a movement.

1. The Helmet Catch (2008). Everything about this was legendary. The Giants weren’t just in the Super Bowl against the Patriots. They were looking to halt history, trying as underdogs to spoil New England’s bid for the first perfect NFL season in more than 30 years. They were trailing in the final two minutes. And then Eli Manning escaped the tugs of a Patriots pass rush and sent the ball to the skies in desperation, only for David Tyree to go up and come down with the pigskin pinned to his blue helmet in what some might’ve perceived as proof of divine intervention. The miracle propelled the Giants to finish the drive and hoist the trophy, ensuring forever the Patriots would be remembered as 18-1.
