Giants need rookie cornerback to step up big against Washington

December 2, 2022 by Empire Sports Media

The New York Giants have dealt with a remarkable amount of injuries this season, which has forced several young pieces to come in and play big roles.

The New York Giants need Cor’Dale Flott to step up:

The next man up is rookie cornerback Cordale Flott. After playing in the first three weeks of the season, Flott did not see the field again until Week 11 due to a calf injury, and now he returns having to play a huge role in the Giants’ secondary with several key defensive pieces such as Adoree Jackson and Xavier McKinney out for New York on Sunday.

With the Washington Commanders coming in having won six of their last seven games and the Giants having lost three of their last four, New York is going to be asking for a lot from the rookie cornerback drafted out of LSU to stop their red-hot division rival from jumping them in the playoff race.

On the season, Flott has 13 combined tackles in five games this season, though he played zero defensive snaps in Week 1.

Flott is cearly still adjusting to the intensity of the NFL, as he has struggled to match up with some of the fast, agile receivers in the league, allowing 76.9% of targets to be completed and also allowing 13.4 yards per completion to his targets.

Sunday is arguably Flott’s biggest opportunity to impress Brian Daboll and the Giants’ coaching staff coming up, as he will be matching up against electric Washington players such as Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson.

Making the transition from college to pro is far from easy, and it is even more challenging for a player to adjust when they miss time with an injury.

Prior to the season, Flott reached out to elite players at his position, such as Bills All-Pro cornerback Tre’davious White to help him get adjusted to the league. Sunday would be a good time to put the advice given to him into action.

“I talked to a lot of guys like Tre’davious White. With those veteran guys, if they ever call me personally to talk to me and give me advice”, Flott said. “And [there are] some guys that I talk to here.

Flott will likely see the most action of his career on Sunday in the Giants’ biggest game of the season. It is to be seen how big of an impact he will make on the field, but New York would sure love to get a big game out of him.
