Giants Coach Clarifies Quarterback Battle After Jaxson Dart Selection

April 25, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Jaxson Dart Giants

The New York Giants had an eventful first day of the 2025 NFL Draft, trading up into the back of the first round to select Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart. Following the failed Daniel Jones experiment, New York needed a young prospect to inspire some hope in the future, and Dart fits that description. However, even though he is the Giants future, he may not be the present. New York signed veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston earlier in the offseason, and both players are capable of handling starting duties in the short term.

Shortly after the Jaxson Dart pick, Giants head coach Brian Daboll announced that the rookie will not enter the offseason as the starting quarterback. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, but what is interesting is that he said Russell Wilson will be the starting quarterback in the spring.

Brian Daboll Clarifies Giants Quarterback Situation Following Jaxson Dart Selection

Russell Wilson may not be the player he once was, but the one-time Super Bowl champion remains the obvious choice to enter the offseason as the starting quarterback. While he struggled down the stretch last year, he put together a decent season during his lone campaign in Pittsburgh. Starting 11 games, the former third-round pick completed 63.7% of his passes for 2,842 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions. These aren’t MVP numbers, but he proved he can still be a fine bridge quarterback.

What’s interesting about Daboll’s comments is that he seems to be keeping the door open for Jaxson Dart to win the Week 1 job. Dart spent his collegiate career in a quarterback-friendly scheme, so nobody knows how quickly he can adjust to the more chaotic world of the NFL. If he learns quickly, he could beat out Wilson for the Week 1 job. However, if Jaxson Dart isn’t ready to suit up for the Giants, Wilson (and Winston) are more than capable of starting for the first few weeks of 2025, or even the whole season.
