Things didn’t go as planned for Brian Daboll and the New York Giants in 2023 and the head coach is admitting that there are ways he could’ve handled himself better amid the team’s struggles.
Daboll has become known for some of his visceral reactions on the sideline and its caught the attention of owner John Mara who has said he wishes he would “tone it down” a bit. Telling NJ.com:
There are times when I wish he would tone it down a little bit. … Does he get excitable during the games sometimes? Yeah. So do I. But I don’t think it’s a major issue. I don’t think it affects the culture that we have in the building at all. I still very firmly believe that Brian is the right guy for us going forward. I want him to be himself at the end of the day. If I get to the point where I think he’s acting irrationally and it’s affecting his performance, I certainly would have a word with him. I have not seen that.
In a recent piece by Jordan Raanan of ESPN, Daboll addressed some of his in-game behavior. Saying, “Yeah, there are times I wish I handled things a little bit differently, certainly. So, you continue to grow, continue to evolve. … You have to grow in this business. You have to learn from some of your mistakes. You can try to build on some of the things you think you did well and do it with an open mind.”
The Giants finished 6-11 last season after an ugly 2-8 start. We’ll see how Daboll chooses to evolve in Year 3 of his program.
