Giants as committed to Evan Engram as they are to Daniel Jones

March 11, 2021 by Giants Wire Leave a Comment

When New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman and head coach Joe Judge met with reporters earlier this week, they once again made it crystal clear that they’re sticking with quarterback Daniel Jones.

Both Gettleman and Judge said they were not at all tempted by the NFL’s sudden quarterback carousel and never once considered moving on from the 23-year-old. They view Jones as the franchise all the snickering be damned.

But Jones isn’t the only Giants player who received a vote of confidence from the GM and head coach. Tight end Evan Engram, who has been maddeningly inconsistent throughout his career, was also lauded as an untouchable superstar whom the team believes in.

In fact, Judge implied that Engram will be a featured part of Jason Garrett’s offense in 2021.

“I love Evan. I have a ton of confidence in Evan. He’s fun to coach, the guys have fun playing with him, he gives everyone in the locker room a ton of confidence,” Judge said. “This guy goes out there every day and this guy works tirelessly, I mean tirelessly. This guy is a tank every day, so in terms of confidence within the program, absolutely we have confidence in him, 100 percent. He’s a guy that obviously we have to keep continuing to feature in the offense.”

Although Engram made the Pro Bowl last season — his first — he was among the league leaders in dropped passes (8), which included a highlight drop in Week 7 against the Philadelphia Eagles that cost the Giants the game. That drop was also felt in Week 17 when New York came up one game short of winning the NFC East.

On the positive side of things, Engram did shake off some injury woes and appeared in all 16 games for the first time in his career. He also finished the season with 680 yards from scrimmage, the second-highest total of his career, and vastly improved his blocking ability.

There’s no denying that Engram has all the potential in the world, but if the Giants are going to feature him on offense, he’ll have to become a more consistent player. Anything short of that and he puts the team in jeopardy due to his untimely absent-mindedness.
