Former New York Giants assistant coach Romeo Crennel, who currently serves as the senior advisor for football performance with the Houston Texas, will soon be indicted into the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.
The 74-year-old Crennel is a member of a six-person class that also features former NBA first-round pick Elmore Smith and Olympic gold medalist Rachel Komisarz Baugh, among others.
Currently Senior Advisor for Football Performance for the Houston Texans, Crennel graduated from Ft. Knox High School, then was a four-year starter in football for WKU (1966-69) and team captain as a senior. Following one season as a graduate assistant coach at WKU, he was a fulltime defensive assistant in college for a total of 11 years at WKU, Texas Tech, Mississippi and Georgia Tech.
In 1981, Crennel moved on to a career in the NFL that stands at 38 years and counting. His first stop was special teams coordinator with the New York Giants, and he moved through the ranks and was defensive coordinator for five Super Bowl wins – two with the Giants (1986, 1990) and three with New England (2001, 2003, 2004). Crennel was named NFL Assistant Coach of the Year in 2003 by the Pro Football Writers of America. He was head coach at Cleveland four seasons and interim head coach for a season at both Kansas City and Houston.
As his Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame bio states, Crennel spent 12 years with the Giants from 1981 to 1992, winning two Super Bowl titles and filling a variety of roles over that span.
Crennel and the other inductees will be honored on September 7, 2021 at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville, Kentucky.
