Could Giants pursue a trade for Patriots WR N'Keal Harry?

March 11, 2021 by Giants Wire Leave a Comment

The New York Giants are in the market for a long-bodied wide receiver to stick on the outside and compliment their other wideouts, Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton.

There are many in the upcoming draft but there is also one on the trading block — New England’s N’Keal Harry, a 2019 first round pick that has underperformed in his first two seasons in the NFL.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Harry has just 45 catches for 414 yards with four touchdowns in 21 games over his first two seasons. Not exactly the return Bill Belichick & Co. were expecting when they selected Harry out of Arizona State two Aprils ago.

So, now come the trade rumors. With the Patriots looking to jump start in the post-Tom Brady era, they are moving on from players that have not made an impact and Harry certainly fits that bill.

Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network called Harry an “interesting guy to watch here as we get into the start of the league year, maybe a little bit further, as we get closer to the draft because there’s going to be a lot of moving parts in New England … particularly this year.”

There will be interest. Harry is a big target who, under the right conditions, could finally put things together. Of course, he’ll need to go to a team that has an established vertical passing attack. The Giants are not one of those teams. They have deployed a short-passing approach that would not suit Harry’s skills.

Whoever decides to make a trade offer for Harry would likely have to surrender no higher than a fourth rounder in my estimation but in the league, you never know. The upside on Harry is that he still has two years remaining on his rookie deal and as first round pick, is eligible for the fifth-year option. He will earn $1.4 million this year and $1.8 million next year.
