It’s bordering on humorous that fans are freaking out that a contract with Harbaugh hasn’t been signed. Everything that has been reported by reputable sources indicates they are merely working through details. None of those details are dealbreakers. Chill.
Giants fans are so shot, so afflicted with franchise-dysfunctional-PTSD, that they have collectively lost their minds. There was a pervasive sense of gloom. 38 times burned, 39 times shy. I get it. I understand. As a markets guy during the day, I get that the trend is your friend and the Giants trend was an ugly bear market going to/at zero. Hope has been regularly squandered. This NY Giants blog itself has been extremely critical of John Mara, the common thread in this 13 year descent into 1970’s franchise hell.
Another element in successful trading is being a contrarian. Trades get crowded. Sentiment gets overextended, either too bullish (euphoric) or too bearish (complete despair). Yes, the trend is more powerful than trying to pick bottoms or tops. But, if you join a trend late in the game, you’re going to get undermined by poor reward vs risk. The money was on Harbaugh while PTSD was having none of it. That was called sentiment divergence. End of trend.
George Young ended the 70’s bear market. Eli Manning and John Harbaugh are ending this one. A 13 year bear market can take a few more days to iron out some issues that are important to both sides. Ironically, this is probably a very good thing. I may be reading between the lines but there’s a chance (as pointed out by D.R. in a tweet yesterday) that Harbaugh is trying to bring the medical/strength/conditioning under his auspices. Remember, King Ronnie Barnes reports directly to John Mara, which means he reports to no one. The King has (what Antonio Pierce referred to as) “the juice.” It’s frankly ridiculous, one of the elements of organizational dysfunction that might be in negotiations to get dismantled. No. I do not know this. I’m not spreading rumors. I’m merely trying to connect some dots. D.R. maybe right. This could be one of those items being worked out before Harbaugh signs. Seen through this lens, WHATEVER JOHN HARBAUGH IS DOING RIGHT NOW IS GOOD FOR THE GIANTS. Harbaugh isn’t a megalomaniac thirsting for power. He is already on the job, a CEO who has the (“seen it all”) experience to structurally fix things NOW before he starts. If these things don’t get resolved NOW, it will restrict what Harbaugh needs to do LATER. Mara and team know that they need Harbaugh. It’s a blessing for this franchise that the Baltimore Way is already at work fixing what ails the Giants.
