The New York Giants need a new head coach, and some reports indicate they could consider eight-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick. Best known for his time with the New England Patriots, Belichick first made a name for himself with Bill Parcells and the New York Giants. Serving as the defensive coordinator for two championship squads, Belichick coached one of the most lethal units in history, and his game plan against Jim Kelly and the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV was so good it’s currently displayed in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Former New York Giants head coach Brain Daboll guided the team to the playoffs in 2022, but three consecutive losing seasons forced ownership to make a change. Following an unceremonious breakup with the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick is currently UNC’s head coach, but would he consider a return to the New York Giants?

In short, no. Bill Belichick recently released a statement saying that he’s not interested in returning to the NFL and that his sole focus is on rebuilding the UNC football program. While he has “a great respect” for the Giants organization, he has no desire to leave his current job.

This statement shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, but it’s a little shocking that the New York Giants were reportedly considering Bill Belichick in the first place. While he is one of the all-time great coaches, the 73-year-old coach is not exactly a spring chicken. Pete Carroll is the only other over-70 head coaching hire in recent memory, and the former Seattle Seahawks head coach has guided the Las Vegas Raiders to an unimpressive 2-7 record through the first nine games of his inaugural season.
Bill Belichick’s Recent History
Even if age wasn’t a concern, Bill Belichick’s recent years suggest he may be losing his fastball. While nobody could ever question his status as one of the game’s all-time great minds, time comes for us all, and the past half-decade or so has not been great for the eight-time Super Bowl champion.
The Patriots went all-in for the final years of the Tom Brady Era, so nobody should be too surprised that the team struggled with an aging Cam Newton under center in 2020. Belichick appeared to rebuild on the fly in 2021 when he guided a rookie Mac Jones to a Wild Card spot, but everything went downhill after that.
Jones regressed in 2022, and hiring the defensive-minded Matt Patricia to be the de facto offensive coordinator didn’t help matters. After a disastrous 2023, in which the team went 4-13, the Patriots fired Bill Belichick. Nobody tried to hire him in 2024, and he eventually took the UNC job in 2025.
