A three-part docuseries will weave the story of the Huskies’ most recent national championship run into a narrative history of the program.
UConn women’s basketball’s 12th national championship had a fairy tale feeling to it. In Paige Bueckers’ final game during the 40th season of Geno Auriemma’s tenure, the Huskies won it all and snapped a nine-year title drought in the process.
Hollywood couldn’t have written a better script, so instead it’ll try to capture the magic in a docuseries. Apple TV+ and Skydance Sports announced it’ll produce a three-part series on UConn women’s basketball, though the release date has not yet been announced. Using behind-the-scenes looks, archival footage and interviews, it’ll weave the story of the Huskies’ most recent national championship run into a narrative history of the program.
“We’re thrilled to be working with Apple TV+ and Skydance Sports on this project that gives a behind-the-scenes look at our National Championship run that has never been seen before,” Geno Auriemma said in a release. “This series offers fans an exclusive view into 40 seasons of UConn women’s basketball, and I’m really excited for audiences to be able to see all the hard work that has built this program.”
While the Huskies have been the subject of documentaries and series in the past — SNY has produced plenty while HBO followed the team’s 2016-17 campaign — the Apple TV+ project will strive to become the definitive history of the program.
Skydance Sports is one of the leading filmmakers in the sports world at the moment, producing shows such as “Aaron Rodgers: Enigma”, “Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants” and “Freediver”. The UConn series will be directed by Matthew Hamachek and Erica Sashin.
