The Huskies miss out on the field for the first time since 2017.
UConn baseball’s NCAA Tournament bid streak ends at six after being left out of the field of 64 on Monday. The Huskies joined Southeastern Louisiana, Troy and Virginia among the first four out.
Creighton, the Big East Tournament champion, earned the league’s automatic bid and is the 3-seed in the Fayetteville Regional. Xavier missed the field as well, making the Big East a one-bid conference.
Jim Penders’ team failed to make the cut despite a 2-0 record against regional hosts, with both wins coming against top-eight seeds, as well as a 21-18 road and neutral record, along with a top-80 strength of schedule.
UConn also lost just three games to sub-100 competition, going 28-3 record against such teams. However, it was just 12-16 against Quads 1 and 2, recording just one Quad 1 series win. That came against Miami (FL) in early March.
Jay Artigues, the chair of the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee, cited UConn’s 3-6 record against Creighton and Xavier, the other top programs in the Big East, as a reason to that the program didn’t do enough, as well as its 3-4 RPI top-100 record since the middle of April.
The Huskies last missed the field since 2017, when they were also among the first four out.
